Agent-based modelling to simulate farmers' sustainable decisions: Farmers' interaction and resulting green consciousness evolution

Antonino Marvuglia et al.

Summary: Agent-based models (ABMs) are used to simulate cropping activities in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The model takes into account farmers' proneness to risk and their interactions within a social network. The study shows that the interactions among farmers affect their environmental awareness and, consequently, their long-term decisions regarding agricultural activities.

Building an agent-based techno-economic assessment coupled with life cycle assessment of biomass to methanol supply chains

Liandong Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an agent-based simulation-optimization method to analyze the total cost of the methanol supply chain. By evaluating the overall product system and individual components, and considering key decision-making factors, the effectiveness of different methanol synthesis pathways is assessed. The results show that the conversion technology pathway of producing methanol from biogas has lower carbon emissions, higher internal rate of return, shorter payback period, and lower price sensitivity.

Summary: An innovative modelling framework and metrics have been developed to assess the economic and environmental performances of regional incentives in the wood energy sector. The study finds that subsidies can improve the eco-efficiency of the forest-based sector when considering potential trade-offs.

Climate-related land use policies in Brazil: How much has been achieved with economic incentives in agriculture?

Marcelo Carauta et al.

Summary: The Brazilian federal government implemented policy measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from land use change and agriculture, with partial success in combating illegal deforestation but uncertainty surrounding the effectiveness of positive incentive measures. Farmers' responses to policy incentives were largely driven by cost and benefit considerations at the farm level. The effectiveness of market-based incentives in agriculture could not be easily verified with current remote sensing monitoring approaches.

Application of territorial emission factors with open-access data-a territorial LCA case study of land use for livestock production in Wallonia

Tianran Ding et al.

Summary: This study aims to facilitate territorial LCA applications by conducting a case study on land use for livestock production in Wallonia, Belgium, using GIS and open-access data to construct inventories. By calculating emission factors for animal land use, the study emphasizes the importance of territorial LCA and highlights the role of GIS in identifying hotspots of agricultural practices at the subnational level in the absence of complete information.

Summary: TLCA is a promising method for assessing environmental impacts of agricultural activities and supporting informed decision making. Through a study in a territory in the Aube department in France, it was found that TLCA can be used to evaluate the impact of material flows between sectors and estimate the environmental impacts of future strategies.

Iowa Urban FEWS: Integrating Social and Biophysical Models for Exploration of Urban Food, Energy, and Water Systems

Jan Thompson et al.

Summary: Most people live in urban areas with high population densities, heavy reliance on external resources, and large waste production, leading to severe environmental impacts. Integrated study of urban areas involves social and biophysical data modeling, aiming to improve system function and sustainability. The research focuses on analyzing the urban food-energy-water systems (FEWS) nexus, using co-simulation to assess current and future conditions and enhance resilience.
