An enhanced rural anoxic/oxic biological contact oxidation process with air-lift reflux technique to strengthen total nitrogen removal and reduce sludge generation

Tianlong Zheng et al.

Summary: The air-lift reflux technique enhances pollutant removal efficiency and reduces excess sludge yield in the rural A/O biological contact oxidation process. The technique increases the population of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, thereby improving the removal capacity of total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen. Additionally, the degradation of returned oxic sludge in the anoxic tank helps to decrease excess sludge yield.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Blackwater Septic Systems

Loi Tan Huynh et al.

Summary: The study investigated methane and carbon dioxide emissions from blackwater septic systems in Hanoi, Vietnam, finding that methane emissions were significantly correlated with ORP, chemical oxygen demand, and biochemical oxygen demand. The methane emission rates were higher in tanks with longer septage storage periods compared to those with shorter periods.

Analysis of suitable private-secondary-main sewer diameters in rural areas based on cost model and hydraulic calculation

Wenkai Li et al.

Summary: High cost of sewer systems hinders sewage collection in rural areas, but using small diameter sewers can reduce costs. This study establishes cost models and hydraulic calculations to determine suitable sewer diameters for rural areas, finding that 200mm main sewers are suitable for villages with less than 1000 households.

Towards the formulation of rural sewage discharge standards in China

Y. D. Xie et al.

Summary: In China, most rural areas lack specific sewage discharge standards and existing standards are similar to urban ones. This research provides a structural framework for the formulation and revision of rural sewage discharge standards based on data from 31 provinces and cities, utilizing components like end-use and environmental capacity. The study highlights the potential for guiding the design of discharge standards in rural wastewater treatment in China and other developing countries.
