Energy and water footprints of cereal production in China

Yijie Zhai et al.

Summary: This study conducted an energy and water footprint analysis of cereal production in China, focusing on wheat, maize, and rice. It found that rice production had a significantly higher water footprint compared to maize and wheat, and agricultural economic effect was the largest driving factor in promoting environmental burdens. Effective measures such as optimizing plantation structure and implementing rational agricultural management practices are recommended for achieving resource-saving and ecofriendly agricultural development.

Searching for Win-Win solutions for food-water-GHG emissions tradeoffs across irrigation regimes of paddy rice in China

Zhan Tian et al.

Summary: Paddy rice cultivation in China is a significant source of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Water-saving irrigation technologies have been tested to increase the drainage period during the rice growth cycle to balance food security with environmental impacts. Computer simulations show that compared to traditional flooded rice fields, water-saving irrigation methods can significantly reduce methane emissions with minimal impact on rice yields.

Quantification of global and national nitrogen budgets for crop production

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: Input-output estimates of nitrogen on cropland are essential for improving nitrogen management and understanding the global nitrogen cycle. While most datasets show similar patterns, some annual estimates vary widely, leading to large ranges of uncertainty. The comparison of nitrogen budget terms by country reveals areas for improvement.
