A review on anaerobic digestion with focus on the role of biomass co-digestion, modelling and optimisation on biogas production and enhancement

Tawanda Kunatsa et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the current status, recent trends, and future perspectives in modelling and optimization of anaerobic co-digestion. It points out areas that can be focused on and those requiring further research to enhance biogas production. Controlling key process factors such as temperature, pH, and carbon to nitrogen ratio is crucial in improving biogas yield.

Climate mitigation efficacy of anaerobic digestion in a decarbonising economy

David Styles et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion (AD) plays an important role in biowaste management, energy generation, food production, and carbon dioxide removal. The greenhouse gas mitigation efficacy of AD is limited compared to alternative processes such as waste prevention and conversion to animal feed. Solar electricity generation and afforestation have greater potential for saving fossil energy and mitigating greenhouse gases. In the transportation sector, biomethane is currently the most effective for GHG mitigation, but as electric transport and BECCS are deployed, large-scale combustion of biogas for electricity or industrial heat generation will become the most effective option. Prioritizing waste prevention and conversion to animal feed can have multiple benefits, but AD remains the best option for managing substantial volumes of residual food waste and manure.

Jemma Reynolds et al.

Summary: Maximizing the use of anaerobic digestion to generate power from waste is a practical way to transition to a circular economy and reduce the carbon footprint. This study focuses on the feasibility of an anaerobic digestion plant for sustainable waste management on Orkney Islands, considering factors such as waste quantities, available technology, community buy-in, environmental impacts, and economics. The study shows that anaerobic digestion can bring environmental benefits and provide a constant base load of energy. Collaboration between communities and regulatory bodies is essential for creating a circular economy and reducing carbon footprint.

Alternative energy management strategies for large industry in non-gas-grid regions using on-farm biomethane

Donal O. Ceileachair et al.

Summary: A methodology was developed to determine the location and biomethane potential of on-farm biomass feedstocks, as well as the quantity of biomass away from existing gas grids. Decentralized systems that can be integrated with large industry in such locations offer an alternative deployment opportunity to centralized gas grid injection. Thematic maps were developed to show the quantity of on-farm feedstocks in different regions of Ireland and their distance from the existing gas network.

Implications of European Union recast Renewable Energy Directive sustainability criteria for renewable heat and transport: Case study of willow biomethane in Ireland

A. Long et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the life-cycle emissions from gasification methanation of willow to produce renewable biomethane, comparing it to the sustainability criteria in the European Renewable Energy Directive. Results show that converting land from grassland for willow cultivation results in greater emissions, while conversion from arable land emits less.

The Role of Anaerobic Digestion in Reducing Dairy Farm Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Alun Scott et al.

Summary: This study reveals that despite significant success in capturing CH4 and carbon dioxide as biogas and preventing N2O emissions, gains made can be lost in a subsequent process, negating some or all of the advantage. Additionally, the process of extracting value from the captured resource is discussed in light of current farm parameters together with indications of other potential revenue streams.

Changes in feedstocks of rural anaerobic digestion plants: External drivers towards a circular bioeconomy

J. Chodkowska-Miszczuk et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand changes in feedstocks of anaerobic digestion plants in Poland and identify opportunities for closed-cycle energy production and circular bioeconomy approaches. The analysis highlights the increasing importance of biowaste in sustainable biogas generation and the gradual shift towards energy processing of more sustainable AD substrates in Poland. Despite low environmental awareness among AD operators, there has been a significant evolution in the mix of substrates, with biowastes from the food industry and municipal sources gaining significance over time.
