Use of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products during the Covid-19 pandemic

Silvano Gallus et al.

Summary: A study conducted in Italy found that there were minimal changes in the use of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products during the lockdown period. A small percentage of non-users started using these products during the lockdown, while the number of users of heated tobacco products slightly increased. The new users were younger, had anxiety symptoms, were male, and were cannabis users.

Content of toxic components of cigarette, cigarette smoke vs cigarette butts: A comprehensive systematic review

Farshid Soleimani et al.

Summary: Commercially sold cigarettes contain over 7000 chemicals, producing various potential toxicants during combustion. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other aromatic hydrocarbons are major components, while metals and nitrosamines are found in higher concentrations in sidestream smoke. Tobacco toxicants are inhaled by smokers and transmitted to the environment through secondhand smoke, thirdhand smoke, and discarded cigarette butts.

Volatile organic compounds of tobacco leavesversuswaste (scrap, dust, and midrib): extraction and optimization

Marija Banozic et al.

Summary: The volatile composition of three types of tobacco waste was characterized and compared with tobacco leaves, showing significant influence of different ultrasound-assisted extraction parameters. The most abundant compounds in tobacco leaves, scrap, and dust were nicotine, 4,8,13-duvatriene-1,3-diol, and neophytadiene.

Effect of Aliquat®336 on supported liquid membrane on electromembrane extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

N. Aranda-Merino et al.

Summary: Most electromembrane extraction methods have used pure organic solvents or mixtures, but the addition of carriers in the supported liquid membrane can improve the extraction of high polar compounds. Optimizing factors such as support thickness, liquid membrane composition, pH, voltage, and electrode configuration enhanced the extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The use of Aliquat (R) 336 as a cationic carrier in the modified supported liquid membrane showed better extraction efficiencies, with detection limits ranging from 0.02-1.0 ng mL-1.
