Post-Density Matrix Renormalization Group Methods for Describing Dynamic Electron Correlation with Large Active Spaces

Yifan Cheng et al.

Summary: The ab initio density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method is well-established and accurate for electronic structure solutions in large active spaces. Various post-DMRG methods have been proposed to capture missing dynamic correlation. These methods are classified into two categories based on the use of high-order n-electron reduced density matrices, with their advantages and disadvantages discussed. The development perspectives of post-DMRG approaches are also discussed for complex electronic structures in large strongly correlated systems.

Mixed precision s-step Lanczos and conjugate gradient algorithms

Erin Carson et al.

Summary: The s-step Lanczos algorithm has the potential to improve performance by reducing synchronization costs per iteration, but may exhibit greater loss of accuracy and slower convergence in finite precision due to the conditioning of the Krylov bases. By performing select computations in double the working precision, the error terms in the s-step Lanczos algorithm can depend linearly on the conditioning of the bases, leading to improved numerical behavior with minimal impact on performance. Preliminary performance results on NVIDIA V100 GPUs show that using extra precision implemented in hardware can minimize the overhead.

Optimizing two-electron repulsion integral calculations with McMurchie-Davidson method on graphic processing unit

Yingqi Tian et al.

Summary: This article presents several optimization methods for calculating two-electron repulsion integrals on a GPU, including a new Boys function evaluation method, new forms and recurrence relations for Hermite expansion coefficients, as well as a new recurrence formula that saves float and memory operations. Additionally, a common subexpression elimination method is implemented. The optimized method achieved significant speedups compared to the original MD method and the GAMESS calculation.
