A hybrid science-guided machine learning approach for modeling chemical processes: A review

Niket Sharma et al.

Summary: This study presents a hybrid process modeling approach that combines scientific knowledge and data analytics in bioprocessing and chemical engineering with a science-guided machine learning (SGML) method. The study reviews the literature, proposes a systematic classification of hybrid SGML models, and discusses different methods for applying ML to improve science-based models and applying scientific principles to enhance ML models. Several examples are provided to illustrate the application of different hybrid SGML methodologies in modeling chemical processes.

Extra virgin olive oil under simulated consumption conditions: Evaluation of quality, health, and flavour properties

Dora Klisovic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in quality, health, and flavor properties of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) during simulated domestic consumption conditions. The results showed that the degradation of phenolic and volatile compounds in EVOO was mainly attributed to oil aging, rather than the daily consumption conditions.

Partition of Lipid Classes in Extra Virgin Olive Oil via Classic Liquid Chromatography and Subsequent Characterization Employing GC-FID and ESI-MS

Patricia M. Souza et al.

Summary: The study utilized classic liquid chromatography, gas chromatography with flame ionization detector, and direct infusion by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to separate, identify, and quantify lipid classes in olive oil. Results revealed higher percentage of monounsaturated fatty acids in the non-polar lipid fraction than in the polar fraction, indicating different affinities of fatty acids towards stationary and mobile phases. The major triacylglycerols of olive oil were identified in the neutral lipid fraction, supporting the partition of polar and non-polar lipid fractions by classic liquid chromatography.

Cultivar and geographical origin authentication of Italian extra virgin olive oil using front-face fluorescence spectroscopy and chemometrics

Dimas Firmanda Al Riza et al.

Summary: A front-face fluorescence method was used to analyze the excitation-emission matrix (EEM) of various Italian mono-cultivar and mix-cultivar extra virgin olive oils. It was found that at least 3 excitation wavelengths are needed to obtain 5 variables explaining over 95% of the sample variance, leading to the identification of sensitive fingerprint characteristics of the EVOOs. A non-parametric fine k-NN classifier was determined to be the best model for classifying the cultivar and geographical origins of the EVOOs, showcasing the potential for multiple excitation fluorescence techniques in authentication.

In-situ assessment of olive oil adulteration with soybean oil based on thermogravimetric-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry combined with chemometrics

Xia Zhou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility of using TGA-GC/MS combined with chemometrics for qualitative and quantitative determination of adulteration of olive oil with soybean oil. Discriminative separation between the two groups of oil samples was achieved through PCA, providing satisfactory results for the quantitative evaluation of different mixtures. The non-destructive and solvent-free analytical method proposed in this study is a novel approach in the field.
