Soret separation and thermo-osmosis in porous media

Bjorn Hafskjold et al.

Summary: This study investigates the component separation and pressure difference effects in a porous medium subjected to a temperature difference. Non-equilibrium thermodynamics and molecular dynamics are used to study these effects. The Soret coefficient and thermo-osmotic coefficient are derived in terms of transport coefficients, and their dependence on porosity and fluid-matrix interactions is analyzed. Numerical values are obtained for a two-component fluid in a solid matrix. The results highlight the importance of considering sampling location and porosity in experimental measurements.

Segregation Behavior of Miscible PC/PMMA Blends during Injection Molding

Nantina Moonprasith et al.

Summary: The surface segregation behavior during flow of miscible blends composed of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with low molecular weight component was studied. The blend samples showed no phase separation and exhibited transparent properties despite the difference in refractive indices between PC and PMMA. This result suggests the occurrence of surface segregation of the low molecular weight component under a flow field.

Complicated Structure Change during Capillary Extrusion of Binary Blends of Polycarbonate and Poly(methyl methacrylate)

Masayuki Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: The effects of pressure and shear rate on the miscibility of binary blends of bisphenol-A polycarbonate and low molecular weight poly(methyl methacrylate) were investigated. Under high pressure, pressure-induced demixing occurred below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the blend, resulting in the opaque appearance of the extruded strand. Shear-induced mixing/demixing led to the formation of opaque regions in the strand, depending on the distribution of shear rate. The study provides valuable insights into the behavior of such blends in practical applications.

Ludwig-Soret effect formulated from the grain-boundary-phase model

Toshiyuki Koyama et al.

Summary: In this study, the Ludwig-Soret effect was analyzed using the grain-boundary-phase model, while thermal vacancy diffusion in a pure metal was simulated. The results showed that excess vacancies preferentially moved to the high-temperature region, and the direct application of the thermodynamic Gibbs energy parameters is essential for analyzing thermal diffusion phenomena.

Flow-Induced Concentration Nonuniformity and Shear Banding in Entangled Polymer Solutions

Michael C. Burroughs et al.

Summary: This study experimentally confirmed the concentration profile of entangled polymer solutions under shear, demonstrating the critical importance of flow-concentration coupling in such systems. The findings showed that at shear rates above a critical value, concentration and velocity profiles can develop bands, consistent with model predictions.

Material design of intelligent plastic products with sound generation function due to snap-through buckling

Ryosuke Hachisuka et al.

Summary: Audible sound is generated during bending deformation due to snap-through buckling in a specific hinge shape of a rigid plastic product. The large elastic energy stored in the bent hinge is suddenly released during buckling, resulting in increased sound pressure. This phenomenon can be used as a sensor to control maximum deformation in intelligent plastic products.
