The mechanism of plasticity and phase transition in iron single crystals under cylindrically divergent shock loading

Jieyao Tan et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanisms of plasticity and alpha ->epsilon phase transition under cylindrically divergent shock loading in iron are investigated using large-scale nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. The study finds that the iron undergoes a local bcc-hcp-bcc-hcp phase transition, with unexpected results of lattice reorientation and hcp twin structures with different c-axis. Additionally, collective movement and rearrangement of atoms induced by plastic slip play a key role in the activation of phase transition, which is significantly different from that under planar shock.

Development of slurry targets for high repetition-rate x-ray free electron laser experiments

Raymond F. Smith et al.

Summary: Combining an x-ray free electron laser with a high-power laser driver allows for the study of equations-of-state, high strain-rate deformation processes, structural phase transitions, and transformation pathways under high pressure conditions. The results of shock compression and x-ray diffraction experiments on slurry targets provide valuable insights into the properties of embedded grains.

Equation of state and strength of diamond in high-pressure ramp loading

Damian C. Swift et al.

Summary: The existing equation of state models for diamond do not accurately capture its observed response to dynamic loading. This study uses density functional theory calculations to extend the pressure range of the diamond phase and develops a constitutive model for simulations. By comparing with experimental stress-density relation, the flow stress of diamond is estimated and a constraint is placed on the Taylor-Quinney factor.

Comparing temperature convergence of shocked thin films of tin and iron to a bulk temperature source

David A. Brantley et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the presence of thermal conduction effects in temperature measurements of tin and iron coatings during dynamic compression experiments. Tin coatings, unlike iron coatings, may fail to converge to a bulk temperature source over the time scale of the experiment, requiring modifications by the experimenter. This work helps to set boundaries on thermal transport under shocked conditions.

Kinematics of slip-induced rotation for uniaxial shock or ramp compression

P. G. Heighway et al.

Summary: Research has shown that when a metallic specimen undergoes plastic deformation, its crystal structure needs to rotate to meet macroscopic boundary conditions. Traditional material science analyses such as Schmid and Taylor fail to accurately predict lattice rotation. A new framework based on elastoplastic decomposition has been proposed for identifying slip systems in single crystals.

Molecular dynamics simulations of inelastic x-ray scattering from shocked copper

O. Karnbach et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the inelastic scattering of x rays from copper single crystals shocked to high pressures. It demonstrates that quasi-elastic scattering competes with inelastic scattering signals under high-pressure conditions, with QES dominating in specific directions in reciprocal space. Synthetic scattering spectra generated from Fourier transforms indicate the need for high energy resolutions to distinguish between inelastic and quasi-elastic scattering.

Melting of Tantalum at Multimegabar Pressures on the Nanosecond Timescale

R. G. Kraus et al.

Summary: Tantalum, once considered a bcc metal, is now predicted to transition to the Pnma phase at high pressures. In in situ x-ray diffraction experiments, tantalum did not transition to the Pnma phase at high pressures but showed incipient melting at approximately 254 GPa and complete melting at 317 GPa. These results are consistent with findings from gas gun experiments, suggesting a melting temperature of 8070 K at 254 GPa.

Summary: In this study, nanosecond compression by a high-power laser is utilized to investigate the metastability limit of liquid water under nearly isentropic compression. The results show that the limit is at least 8 GPa, higher than previously reported values at lower loading rates. Both experimental data and theoretical-computational analysis support this finding.

Summary: This proof-of-principle study demonstrates X-ray Raman Spectroscopy (XRS) on carbon samples at ambient conditions at the European XFEL, providing sufficient spectral resolution to identify local structure and chemical bonding. The high crystal reflectivity and XFEL brightness enable accurate XRS measurements for upcoming pump-probe experiments with high repetition-rate, showcasing the potential of this technique for high-energy-density conditions. The setup allows simultaneous implementation of different diagnostic methods to reduce ambiguities in the analysis of experimental results, promising unprecedented insights into chemical and structural dynamics in warm dense matter states.

Model of ramp compression of diamond from ab initio simulations

Summary: This study used simulations on carbon to investigate the heating effects during ramp compression experiments, finding multiple heating events occurring during the process leading to higher temperatures compared to isentropic compression. Experimental results indicate that heating alone cannot explain the equation of state measurements on diamond, suggesting the presence of significant uniaxial stress component at high compression. Further verification of the temperature predictions from the ramp compression model is needed through future laboratory measurements.
