Effect of Diet Supplementation with the Mycotoxin Binder Montmorillonite on the Bioavailability of Vitamins in Dairy Cows

Abdelhacib Kihal et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the mycotoxin binder montmorillonite (MMT) supplementation on the bioavailability of vitamins in dairy cows. The results showed that the addition of MMT did not affect the bioavailability of vitamins A and B6, but had no impact on vitamins D, E, and B1.

Climate change will increase aflatoxin presence in US Corn

Jina Yu et al.

Summary: The impacts of climate change on agricultural production, including warmer temperatures and extreme weather events, are a global concern. The influence of warming temperatures on plant damage caused by pests and fungal infection is often overlooked. Aflatoxins, carcinogenic chemicals produced by fungi that commonly infect food crops, may see an expanded geographical prevalence due to climate change.

Silicate minerals - Potential source of potash - A review

Jayashree Samantray et al.

Summary: Potassium is the third crucial macronutrient required for plant development and growth. It is predominantly present in soluble form in soil evaporite deposits found in countries like Canada, Belarus, Israel, USA, and Russia. Other countries depend on imports from these countries to meet their potash requirement. However, a significant amount of potassium exists in insoluble form as silicate minerals, such as feldspar and micaceous minerals, abundantly found in these countries. Various methods, including bio-leaching, acid leaching, base leaching, and roast-leach studies, have been adopted to release potassium from these silicate resources. This review provides an overview of these methodologies and highlights future research possibilities.

Nutritional impact of mycotoxins in food animal production and strategies for mitigation

Ran Xu et al.

Summary: Mycotoxins, toxic metabolites produced by filamentous fungi, are commonly found as natural contaminants in agricultural commodities worldwide. Their presence can lead to health issues in both animals and humans, affecting their performance and physiology. Mitigation strategies are necessary to reduce the risk of mycotoxicity.

Vasileios G. Papatsiros et al.

Summary: The study analyzed mycotoxins in liver samples from finisher pigs using liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole coupled with mass spectrometry. Results showed that FB1 remained the most critical risk factor in the Greek pig industry, whereas ZEA and AFB1 were also prevalent. Additionally, OTA contamination in pig farms raised a high risk for animal and human health.

Ability of low contents of biosorbents to bind the food carcinogen aflatoxin B1 in vitro

Maria de Jesus Nava-Ramirez et al.

Summary: In vitro experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of two new biosorbents (lettuce and field horsetail) in removing aflatoxin B-1 (AFB(1)). Lettuce showed the highest ability against AFB(1) removal at pH 7. This study demonstrated that chemical and physical mechanisms were involved in the adsorption process of AFB(1)-loaded biosorbents.

Short Communication: Quantification of the Effect of Mycotoxin Binders on the Bioavailability of Fat-Soluble Vitamins In Vitro

Abdelhacib Kihal et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the impact of six mycotoxin binders on the bioavailability of fat-soluble vitamins in vitro. The results showed that many of the binders adsorb a significant proportion of vitamin E but not vitamin D, indicating a potential reduction in the bioavailability of vitamin E in the presence of mycotoxin binders.
