Dry cow therapy and early lactation udder health problems-Associations and risk factors

R. E. Niemi et al.

Summary: Mastitis control in dairy cows relies heavily on the use of antibiotic dry cow therapy (DCT) at dry-off, with blanket DCT showing controversy in comparison to selective DCT. Factors such as age, previous lactation SCC levels, and milk yield near dry-off contribute to the likelihood of high milk somatic cell count (SCC) post-calving. Additionally, mastitis treatment in early lactation is more common in cows with a history of high SCC, peak milk production, or high milk yield near dry-off in the previous lactation.

Drying-off cows with low somatic cell count with or without antibiotic therapy: A pilot study addressing the effects on immunometabolism and performance in the subsequent lactation

L. Cattaneo et al.

Summary: Pressure to decrease antibiotic use in livestock is increasing, with the prophylactic use of antibiotics set to be banned in the EU in 2022. This study evaluated the effects of selectively treating cows with low SCC at dry-off using internal teat sealant with or without antibiotics, finding no significant differences in udder health or milk production between groups.

Rumination time around dry-off relative to the development of diseases in early-lactation cows

Angel Abuelo et al.

Summary: Monitoring rumination time around the time of calving may help identify cows at risk of disease in early lactation. Biomarkers measured at dry-off can predict higher disease risk in early lactation. However, further investigations are needed to understand the association between rumination time around dry-off and specific health disorders.

Gene network expression of whole blood leukocytes in dairy cows with different milk yield at dry-off

Summary: During the dry-off period, dairy cows undergo significant physiological changes, with high-producing cows exhibiting exacerbated inflammatory responses. Gene expression analysis revealed alterations in leukocyte function and immune response, particularly in cows with high milk yield at dry-off.

Plasma albumin-to-globulin ratio before dry-off as a possible index of inflammatory status and performance in the subsequent lactation in dairy cows

L. Cattaneo et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between the albumin-to-globulin ratio (AG) before dry-off and inflammation, metabolic profile, and performance of 75 Holstein dairy cows. Cows with high AG before dry-off showed improved adaptation to the new lactation, with reduced systemic inflammatory response and increased milk yield compared to cows with low AG.

Jim Weber et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of selective dry cow treatment compared to blanket dry cow treatment in dairy cows in terms of udder health and antibiotic use, finding no significant difference between the two methods. Selective dry cow treatment seems to be a suitable alternative to reduce antibiotic use while maintaining udder health.

Comparing Blanket vs. Selective Dry Cow Treatment Approaches for Elimination and Prevention of Intramammary Infections During the Dry Period: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Fidele Kabera et al.

Summary: Selective dry cow antimicrobial treatment (SDCT) reduces antimicrobial use during the dry period by 66% compared to blanket dry cow treatment (BDCT), with no difference in eliminating existing intramammary infections (IMI). Evidence suggests that SDCT, when combined with an internal teat sealant for healthy, untreated quarters/cows, does not have any detrimental effects on udder health or milk production during the early months of the subsequent lactation.
