Relative proportions of organic carbon functional groups in biochars as influenced by spectral data collection and processing

Sirajum Munira et al.

Summary: Solid-state C-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and synchrotron-based X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) have applications for determining the relative proportions of organic C functional groups in materials. NMR had a better ability than XANES to differentiate % aromatic C across biochars, but the associations between NMR and XANES varied for different organic C functional groups.

A new insight of lignin pyrolysis mechanism based on functional group evolutions of solid char

Haiping Yang et al.

Summary: The study on the mechanism of biomass lignin pyrolysis revealed that the change in alcohol groups occurs earlier than that in carbonyl groups, and the cleavage and remodeling reactions of benzene rings' side chains are synchronous. Additionally, the formation of simple substituted benzene structures precedes the complex ones. Furthermore, decarbonylation, dehydrogenation and dealkylation processes are intensified during the polycondensation of benzene rings.

Study of lignocellulosic biomass ignition properties estimation from thermogravimetric analysis

Blanca Castells et al.

Summary: In the last decade, the use of renewable resources has increased significantly to reduce dependence on fossil fuels due to their contribution to global warming and greenhouse gas effects. Research on biofuels has been on the rise as they can be used in a similar manner to conventional fuels, with solid biomass and biodiesel being possible alternatives. The study combines thermal analysis and ignition properties to examine the relationship between biomass composition and Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE) values, finding that the hemicellulose/cellulose ratio is related to flammability properties. Three tendency areas based on MIE values were identified: high ignition energy, medium ignition energy, and low ignition energy.
