Co-pyrolysis of torrefied biomass and coal: Effect of pressure on synergistic reactions

Saartjie M. Gouws et al.

Summary: The co-utilization of torrefied biomass and coal in thermochemical conversion technologies results in the production of high quality oil products through synergistic reactions, which are controlled by pressure to indirectly influence reaction rates. The removal of hemicellulose during torrefaction enhances hydrogen transfer potential and suppresses dehydration and condensation reactions during co-pyrolysis, leading to substantial changes in product distribution.

Study on the characteristics and mechanism of fast co-pyrolysis of coal tar asphaltene and biomass

Ruishi Zhou et al.

Summary: The co-pyrolysis of coal tar asphaltene (CTA) and biomass was found to have a synergistic effect and could influence the pyrolysis process and product distribution. The tar composition distributions during multi-step pyrolysis determined the reaction temperature range and reaction type of new products. During co-pyrolysis, CTA softened the biomass by heating, affecting mass transfer and the escape of volatile compounds.

Biomass hydrogen donor assisted microwave pyrolysis of low-rank pulverized coal: Optimization, product upgrade and synergistic mechanism

Lei Wu et al.

Summary: Microwave co-pyrolysis of low-rank pulverized coal (PC) and wheat straw (WS) was investigated to optimize the conditions and maximize tar yield. Addition of WS significantly improved the microwave pyrolysis of PC, resulting in increased tar and pyrolysis gas yields. The composition of the coal tar was also altered, with a decrease in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and an increase in phenols and alcohols.

Mechanism of synergistic effects and kinetics analysis in catalytic co-pyrolysis of water hyacinth and HDPE

Siying Zhong et al.

Summary: Co-pyrolysis of water hyacinth and HDPE is an effective method to mitigate environmental pollution, with the addition of HDPE reducing char formation and promoting complete reaction. The sample with 75% water hyacinth exhibited the strongest synergistic effect, while the presence of HZSM-5 catalyst lowered activation energy and promoted synergistic effects in co-pyrolysis.

The effect of biomass addition on pyrolysis characteristics and gas emission of coal gangue by multi-component reaction model and TG-FTIR-MS

Haobo Bi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the pyrolysis experiment of biomass added to coal gangue using the TG-FTIR-MS method. It was found that biomass can promote the release of gaseous organic matter during coal gangue pyrolysis, while inhibiting the formation of CO2. Different proportions of biomass in the mixture have varying effects on the gas products of coal gangue pyrolysis, which can be well simulated using multi-component reaction models.

Summary: The study found that the changes of pyrolysis products during the co-pyrolysis process of biomass and coal are similar to that in the separate pyrolysis process, with main pyrolysis products released at different temperatures. Additionally, most of the raw materials are independently pyrolyzed during the co-pyrolysis process, and the addition of biomass does not significantly affect the content variations of aromatic compounds.
