Catalytic conversion of cellulose to levoglucosenone using propylsulfonic acid functionalized SBA-15 and H2SO4 in tetrahydrofuran

Oscar Oyola-Rivera et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic conversion of cellulose to levoglucosenone (LGO) using a combination of dilute sulfuric acid and propylsulfonic acid functionalized SBA-15 (PS-SBA-15) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The addition of small amounts of liquid acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid was found to complement the use of solid acid catalyst for cellulose conversion, leading to an increase in LGO yield. The main role of the solid Bronsted acid catalyst was to dehydrate the generated levoglucosan (LGA) into LGO, demonstrating a more environmentally friendly approach for LGO production.

Iodine-Modified Pd Catalysts Promote the Bifunctional Catalytic Synthesis of 2,5-Hexanedione from C6 Furan Aldehydes

Zhikun Tong et al.

Summary: This study successfully modulated the intimacy between hydrogenation sites and acidic sites using iodine(I)-modified Pd-supported catalysts, leading to improved selectivity and yield in the synthesis of 2,5-hexanedione. Additionally, the selective synthesis of 2,5-hexanedione from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural via hydrogenolysis and subsequent ring-opening route was reported for the first time.

Probing the morphological effects of ReOx/CeO2 catalysts on the CO2 hydrogenation reaction

Bin Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of ceria (CeO2) morphology on the performance of CO2 hydrogenation reactions. It is found that CeO2 nanorod supported Re catalysts exhibit the highest CO2 conversion and CH4 selectivity compared to other CeO2 morphologies. The CeO2 morphology also influences the electronic metal-support interaction between Re and CeO2, H-2 activation, and CO2 adsorption.

Production of methyl levulinate from cellulose over cobalt disulfide: The importance of the crystal facet (111)

Wenran Gao et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of earth-abundant cobalt disulfide as a heterogeneous catalyst for the conversion of cellulose to methyl levulinate. The highest yield achieved was 61% under specific reaction conditions. Analysis suggests that the crystal facet (111) of cobalt disulfide acts as a robust active site, with the surface Co2+ species being the main chemical valence responsible for methyl levulinate production.

Synthesis of cello-oligosaccharides by depolymerization of cellulose: A review

Pengru Chen et al.

Summary: Cello-oligosaccharides (COS) are small carbohydrate molecules derived from cellulose through partial hydrolysis and have physiological influence on plants, animals, and humans. The potential of COS as a prebiotic for humans and animals, and as an elicitor for plants, has generated interest in their synthesis and purification. The lack of availability of COS, even at scales necessary for research, has hindered progress in this field.

Earth-abundant 3d-transition-metal catalysts for lignocellulosic biomass conversion

Yunchao Feng et al.

Summary: The transformation of biomass into chemicals and fuels is a long-term goal in both science and industry, but high cost is a major obstacle to industrialization. Therefore, the development of catalysts with high activity and low cost is crucial. The use of earth-abundant 3d-transition-metals in catalysis has seen increasing achievement in the past two decades due to their low cost, high efficiency, and excellent stability.
