Citric acid chelated Fe(II) catalyzed peroxidation for simultaneously improving sludge dewaterability and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) removal

Weijun Zhang et al.

Summary: The CA-Fenton process significantly improved sludge dewatering performance and removal of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The acidification of CA enhanced permeability of the EPS cell barrier, releasing intracellular ARGs into the sludge and accelerating their degradation, while also improving sludge dewaterability by destroying the secondary structure of proteins. This study not only proposed an efficient method for traditional Fenton oxidation in sludge treatment, but also provided a mechanistic basis for understanding the CA-Fenton process and enabling the harmless disposal of sludge.

Forming mechanism of coke microparticles from polymerization of aqueous organics during hydrothermal carbonization process of biomass

Ruikun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the growth mechanism of coke microparticles and found that their formation during hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) had a significant impact on the yield and properties of hydrochar. The coke microparticles were observed to undergo two stages of micronuclei formation and growth, involving the polymerization of dissolved organics and the bonding of micronuclei with aqueous organic molecules.

Aqueous phase of thermo-catalytic reforming of sewage sludge-quantity, quality, and its electrooxidative treatment by a boron-doped diamond electrode

Christopher Kick et al.

Summary: This study compares the chemical composition and quantity of the aqueous phase produced from thermo-catalytic reforming process of sewage sludge to those of non-catalytic fast pyrolysis processes. Electrooxidation using a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode is investigated as a purification technology for the resulting aqueous phase. The study shows that the quantity of the aqueous phase depends on the temperature of the thermo-catalytic reforming process and electrooxidation can effectively reduce the chemical oxygen demand.

Artificial Coal: Facile and Green Production Method via Low-Temperature Hydrothermal Carbonization of Lignocellulose

Zhi-Xiang Xu et al.

Summary: A new concept for producing artificial coal in a short time using Mg(NO3)2 as an oxidant under HTC conditions is proposed, which enhances the coalification degree of hydrochar from lignocellulosic materials. Pressure promotes decarboxylation reactions of lignocellulose to form hollow smooth-faced regular spherical particles, while oxidation breaks down the biopolymer structure to form low-molecular-weight compounds.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization of cellulose, hemicellulose, and protein with aqueous phase recirculation: Insight into the reaction mechanisms on hydrochar formation

Tonggui Liu et al.

Summary: Co-hydrothermal carbonization (Co-HTC) coupled with aqueous phase (AP) recirculation has been found to improve hydrochar production by promoting hydrochar formation and reducing oxygen content. The combination of Co-HTC and AP recirculation exhibited enhanced effects. The composition of hydrochar was mainly derived from oxygenated compounds in cellulose and hemicellulose, as well as nitrogen-containing compounds in protein. The major mechanisms for enhanced hydrochar formation during Co-HTC with AP recirculation were the Maillard reaction, catalytical effects from acids in the recycling AP, and the repolymerization or condensation of accumulated compounds in AP.
