Sex differences in neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's disease dementia: a meta-analysis

Willem S. Eikelboom et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sex differences in the prevalence and severity of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in Alzheimer's disease dementia. The results showed that female sex was associated with a higher prevalence and greater severity of several specific NPS, while male sex was associated with more severe apathy. Further research is needed to explore the factors underlying these sex differences in order to guide tailored treatment approaches for NPS in Alzheimer's disease dementia.

Sex differences in the blood-brain barrier and neurodegenerative diseases

Callie M. Weber et al.

Summary: The number of people diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases is increasing, and there are clear sexual dimorphisms in diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. While sex as a biological variable is now included in animal studies, it is rarely considered in in vitro models. Sex and sex hormones may affect BBB integrity, with potential mechanisms explained in this review. Current in vitro BBB bioengineered models show promise in studying sex differences in neurodegenerative diseases.
