Effect of topologically close-packed clusters on glass-forming ability of rapidly supercooled MgCuY alloy

Yuan-wei Pu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of adding trace elements on the glass-forming ability (GFA) of metallic glasses were investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the GFA becomes stronger with the increase of Y element, which can promote the formation of topologically close-packed (TCP) clusters and hinder the crystallization process.

Medium-range order dictates local hardness in bulk metallic glasses

Keita Nomoto et al.

Summary: The study revealed the hierarchical structure of BMGs through nanobeam electron diffraction experiments, showing that the local hardness of microscale domains decreases with the size and volume fraction of atomic clusters with higher local MRO. A model of ductile phase softening was proposed to enable the design of BMGs in the future by tuning the MRO size and distribution in the nanostructure.

Controlling shear band instability by nanoscale heterogeneities in metallic nanoglasses

Sree Harsha Nandam et al.

Summary: By introducing nanoscale heterogeneities, including both crystalline and amorphous, significant improvements in plasticity of metallic glasses can be achieved. Nanoglass exhibits higher yield strength compared to conventional metallic glasses.

Interaction between parallel shear bands in a metallic glass

Karina E. Avila et al.

Summary: In this study using molecular dynamics simulations on a CuZr metallic glass sample, it was observed that the subsequent formation of parallel shear bands can partially relax the core structure of previously formed shear bands, leading to a reduction in potential energy and a return of previous plastic regions. This interaction between shear bands allows for the restoration of the disrupted icosahedral matrix and the eventual recovery of shear transformation zones.

Molecular dynamics simulation of rapid solidification of Cu64Zr36 nanodrops of different sizes

Wei Guo-Cuil et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics simulation was used to investigate the rapid cooling process of Cu64Zr36 nano-droplets, revealing a liquid-liquid transition and liquid-solid transition leading to the formation of amorphous nanoparticles. Analysis of the evolution of topologically close-packed structures allowed for the division of the entire solidification process into four stages: embryo, aggregation, growth, and coarsening.
