Giant elastic response and ultra-stable elastocaloric effect in tweed textured Fe-Pd single crystals

Fei Xiao et al.

Summary: This study reports that a large elastic-like strain of over 4% can be achieved in a tweed textured Fe-Pd single crystal under a compressive stress of 300 MPa. This giant elastic response gives rise to a significant and homogenous elastocaloric effect, which can sustain stable performance during a large number of mechanical cycles.

Toward tunable mechanical behavior and enhanced elastocaloric effect in NiTi alloy by gradient structure

Junyu Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a novel strategy to achieve highly tunable mechanical behavior and significantly enhanced elastocaloric effect in superelastic NiTi through the fabrication of a gradient structure using laser surface annealing. The gradient-structured NiTi exhibits tailorable martensitic transformation characteristics and shows improved elastocaloric cooling capacity and efficiency compared to traditional nanocrystalline and coarse-grained NiTi. The strong synergetic strengthening between fine and coarse grains in the gradient-structured NiTi contributes to these significant performance breakthroughs.

Elastocaloric effect in bamboo-grained Cu71.1Al17.2Mn11.7 microwires

Bo Yuan et al.

Summary: Bamboo-grained Cu71.1Al17.2Mn11.7 microwires with a diameter of around 150 μm were created using the Taylor-Ulitovsky method and subsequent annealing, demonstrating excellent superelasticity and elastocaloric effects. These microwires showed low stress hysteresis loss and a wide temperature range for isothermal entropy change, making them a desirable material for miniature solid-state refrigeration devices.

Improved superelasticity and fatigue resistance in nano-precipitate strengthened Ni50Mn23Ga22Fe4Cu1 microwire

Jiangming Xuan et al.

Summary: This study developed a dual-phase shape memory microwire with superior large reversible strain and extraordinary fatigue resistance, addressing the poor fracture resistance and insufficient cyclic fatigue life of Ni-Mn-Ga shape memory alloy in industrial applications. High-resolution TEM results revealed uniform precipitates of gamma phase in the austenitic matrix, playing a beneficial role in ensuring reproducible transformation stability. This research paves the way for designing fatigue-resistant shape memory alloys with long fatigue life through the synergy of multiphase.
