Microstructure and mechanical properties of hybrid in-situ Ti2AlCw/Mo2B5p reinforced TiAl alloy

Sen Cui et al.

Summary: The Ti-48Al-6Nb alloy is strengthened by in-situ reactions that form Ti2AlC whiskers and Mo2B5 nanoparticles after the addition of AlMo/B4C inoculant powders. Good interface matching between the in-situ phases and the TiAl alloy results in uniform distribution of the in-situ phases, leading to refined grain size and improved mechanical properties. Multiple strengthening and toughening mechanisms induced by the dual-scaled Ti2AlCw and Mo2B5p contribute to the enhancement of the alloy's strength and toughness.

Enhanced strength and ductility in Ti46Al4Nb1Mo alloys via boron addition

Yingmei Tan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of different B contents on Ti46Al4Nb1Mo alloys, revealing that the addition of 1.6% B resulted in the alloy having the highest strength and ductility. The microstructure of borides changed with increasing B content.

Investigation on microstructure heterogeneity of the HPDC AlSiMgMnCu alloy through 3D electron microscopy

Fei Liu et al.

Summary: The microstructural characteristics of HPDC AlSiMgMnCu alloys were studied using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the volume fractions of a-Fe phase, 13 phase, and Q phase were higher in the skin layer and central zone compared to the segregation band zone. Meanwhile, the volume fractions and sizes of the 0 phase were lower in the skin layer and central zone. The morphology of the phases varied in different regions, with the a-Fe phase showing a plate-like morphology in the skin layer.

History and development of γ-TiAl alloys and the effect of alloying elements on their phase transformations

Baohua Duan et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the development trend of γ-TiAl alloys by introducing "Al-equivalent" and discusses the intrinsic nature of this trend in detail from the two aspects of phase transformations and solidification micro-structures. Furthermore, it summarizes the role of common alloying elements in γ-TiAl alloys.

On the Formation Mechanism of Banded Microstructures in Electron Beam Melted Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb and the Design of Heat Treatments as Remedial Action

Reinhold Wartbichler et al.

Summary: The study investigates the formation mechanism of banded microstructures in an electron beam melted Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb alloy, solidification behavior, and heat treatment response through various analytical techniques. The results show that banded microstructures form due to abnormal grain growth and alpha(2) phase leading to Zener pinning of gamma grain boundaries. Increasing energy input leads to higher temperatures, longer liquid state times, and more remelting events, affecting solidification and microstructure alignment.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of novel TiAl alloys tailored via phase and precipitate morphology

David Wimler et al.

Summary: Alloy development based on the intermetallic gamma-TiAl phase has gained renewed interest, with powder metallurgical approaches providing new processing options. Manufacturing via spark plasma sintering allowed for the production of two alloys with specific microstructures, exhibiting high creep strength and resistance. The formation and growth kinetics of carbides are closely linked to the mechanical response of the microstructure, with heat treatment at 800 degrees C leading to the formation of fine carbides and increased strength. The investigated alloys demonstrate ductile behavior at temperatures up to 750 degrees C (BMBF3), while the BMBF2 alloy is considered usable up to 850 degrees C.

Partitioning Behavior of Nb, Ta, and Zr in Fully Lamellar γ/α2 Titanium Aluminides and Its Effect on the Lattice Misfit and Creep Behavior

Steffen Neumeier et al.

Summary: The study investigated the partitioning of Nb, Ta, and Zr in Ti-44Al-5X alloys and their influence on lattice parameters compared to a binary Ti-44Al alloy. Results show that the added elements affect lattice parameters and lattice misfits, ultimately influencing the creep properties of the alloys. The correlation between lattice misfits and primary creep strains suggests a potential method for optimizing the creep properties of titanium aluminides.
