Magnetocaloric effect and magnetic phase diagram of Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler alloy in steady and pulsed magnetic fields

Yu. S. Koshkid'ko et al.

Summary: This work focuses on the investigation of the irreversibility of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) near the magnetostructural phase transition (PT) in Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler alloys. By using direct method and in-situ studies, the width of the irreversible MCE region was determined, and it was found that the presence of residual martensite is the main cause of the irreversible MCE.

Correlation of magnetocaloric effect through magnetic and electrical resistivity on Si doped Ni-Mn-In Heusler melt spun ribbon

P. Sivaprakash et al.

Summary: The effect of Si substitution on the Mn site in Ni47Mn40-xSixIn13 alloy was investigated for its structure, electrical, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties. Increasing Si content lowered both the Curie transition and martensitic phase transition temperatures, leading to exchange bias phenomenon at lower temperatures. The maximum magnetic entropy change decreased with higher Si content, indicating a decrease in magnetocaloric effect.

Competing Interactions between Mesoscale Length-Scales, Order-Disorder, and Martensitic Transformation in Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys

D. Salas et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of composition and heat treatments on the martensitic transformation and ferromagnetic transition in NiCoMnIn metamagnetic shape memory alloys were investigated. The non-monotonic behavior of the onset temperature of the martensitic transformation was found to be related to the evolution of L2(1) domains, and a thermodynamic model was used to understand the role of microstructural length-scales in the transformation. This work provides insights into controlling the coupled magneto-structural transformations in NiCoMnIn alloys.

Strain glass versus antisite disorder induced ferromagnetic state in Fe doped Ni-Mn-In Heusler martensites

R. Nevgi et al.

Summary: Fe doping in Ni-Mn-In alloys can suppress the martensitic phase formation through two contrasting routes, converting to a strain glassy phase or forming a cubic ferromagnetic phase. The presence of impurity phases is found to be the reason for the emergence of non-ergodic strain glassy phase.

Summary: The research team explored a Heusler alloy family with giant magnetocaloric effect, achieving high MCE by fine-tuning the chemical composition to bring the magnetic and structural transition temperatures close. Samples with a certain range of copper concentration exhibited interesting physical properties and achieved high MCE with minimized hysteresis.

Summary: The magnetic ground state of martensite in Ni48Mn39.5Sn9.5Al3 ribbons exhibits complexity and a two-stage behavior, with characteristics of spin glass. Below 80 K, the system enters a magnetically harder and inhomogeneous state distinguished by exchange bias.

Kinetic arrest behavior in Ni-Co-Mn-Sn alloys within the phase boundary between martensite and strain glass

Chunxi Hao et al.

Summary: Kinetic arrest behavior, where magnetic martensitic transition is suppressed during field cooling, results in the appearance of kinetically arrested austenite. This phenomenon is limited to specific compositions due to the competition between kinetic hindrance and martensitic driving force.

Large magnetocaloric effect and excellent mechanical properties near room temperature in Ni-Co-Mn-Ti non-textured polycrystalline alloys

Ziqi Guan et al.

Summary: In this study, the martensitic transformation, magnetic properties, and mechanical properties of Ni-Cu based Heusler alloys were systematically investigated. A Ni36Co14Mn35Ti15 alloy with a large magnetocaloric effect near room temperature was discovered by adjusting the composition. This alloy exhibited a significant magnetization change and magnetic entropy change during martensitic transformation under a 5T magnetic field, along with high compressive strength and ductility in the as-cast state.
