Giant magnetoresistance, magnetostrain and magnetocaloric effects in a Cu-doped < 001 > -textured Ni45Co5Mn36In13.2Cu0.8 polycrystalline alloy

Xiao-Ming Huang et al.

Summary: Ni-Mn-Z (Z = In, Sn, and, Sb) metamagnetic shape memory alloys exhibit state-of-the-art magnetoresponsive effects due to magnetic-field-induced reversible martensitic transformation. By substituting Cu for In in Ni45Co5Mn36In14 alloy, a second-phase freed Ni45Co5Mn36In13.2Cu0.8 alloy is obtained with improved magnetoresponsive effects. The directionally solidified sample shows excellent magnetoresistance and magnetic-field-induced strain, with a significant magnetic entropy change and adiabatic temperature change, indicating promising low-field magnetocaloric response.

Competing Interactions between Mesoscale Length-Scales, Order-Disorder, and Martensitic Transformation in Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys

D. Salas et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of composition and heat treatments on the martensitic transformation and ferromagnetic transition in NiCoMnIn metamagnetic shape memory alloys were investigated. The non-monotonic behavior of the onset temperature of the martensitic transformation was found to be related to the evolution of L2(1) domains, and a thermodynamic model was used to understand the role of microstructural length-scales in the transformation. This work provides insights into controlling the coupled magneto-structural transformations in NiCoMnIn alloys.

Deformation induced martensite stabilization in Ni45Mn36.7In13.3Co5 microparticles

V. Sanchez-Alarcos et al.

Summary: Deformation of a Ni45Mn36.7In13.3Co5 alloy was carried out by hand crushing and ball milling in both martensite and austenite states in order to study the effect of induced plastic deformation on the stability between structural phases. It was found that a significant martensite stabilization occurred, resulting in shifts of up to 100 K in the temperature of the first reverse martensitic transformation. The stabilized martensite exhibited a non-modulated tetragonal structure regardless of the degree of plastic deformation, showing better accommodation of internal stresses than the thermally induced modulated monoclinic martensite.
