Are small farms really more productive than large farms?

Fernando M. Aragon et al.

Summary: This paper highlights that using yields as an indicator may not accurately reflect the relationship between farm size and productivity in small-scale farming. Market distortions and decreasing returns to scale also affect yields, which may result in a misleading interpretation of the relationship between farm productivity and land size. The empirical findings from Uganda, Peru, Tanzania, and Bangladesh emphasize the importance of revisiting the evidence on farm size-productivity relationship for policy implications.

Transient and persistent technical efficiency and its determinants: the case of crop farms in Austria

Felicity Addo et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the persistent and transient technical efficiency of crop farms in Austria from 2003 to 2017. The results show that farms with favorable natural conditions, a higher share of family labor, and a lower share of owned land are more persistently efficient. Farm specialization, size, and farmers' age are positively associated with transient efficiency, while subsidies have adverse impacts. The significant technological progress coupled with decreasing technical efficiency indicates a diverging sector.

Vulnerability of British farms to post-Brexit subsidy removal, and implications for intensification, extensification and land sparing

David Arnott et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the reliance of Welsh farm holdings on Pillar 1 payments using a combined agricultural survey and rural payments data, finding that approximately 34% of sampled Welsh farm holdings face serious financial difficulties and around 44% of agricultural land on sampled farm holdings in Wales are vulnerable to land use change or abandonment. The potential social and ecological impacts of removing direct payments on land use in Wales are considered, along with discussions around a balanced approach to land management to support governmental visions.

European Agriculture after Brexit: Does Anyone Benefit from the Divorce?

Hyung Sik Choi et al.

Summary: This study examines four different future trade scenarios, indicating that regardless of the form of future trade relationship, disruptions will occur in agricultural markets. Food prices in the UK will increase while the EU benefits from declining food prices, however, the loss in farmers' incomes and the UK's EU CAP contribution will outweigh the gains for consumers.

The Effect of Restructuring Electricity Distribution Systems on Firms' Persistent and Transient Efficiency: The Case of Germany

Oleg Badunenko et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the efficiency of electricity distribution operators in Germany, finding that DSOs in the eastern part of the country outperform those in the western part in terms of persistent efficiency. However, both eastern and western DSOs perform similarly well in terms of transient efficiency, which is expected due to the high level of regulation in the sector.

K. Herve Dakpo et al.

Summary: The study extended the latent class stochastic frontier model to compute productivity change in different types of grazing livestock farms in France from 2002 to 2016. Results indicate that productivity change and its components vary across farms, depending on farm type.

Efficiency Analysis as a Tool for Revealing Best Practices and Innovations: The Case of the Sheep Meat Sector in Europe

Alexandros Theodoridis et al.

Summary: The European sheep meat sector is facing technical, market and financial challenges that threaten its economic performance and overall sustainability, largely due to poor and slow adoption of innovations. The most efficient sheep meat farms in France, Spain and the UK were found to rear large flocks, utilize available infrastructure at full capacity, and manage human labor rationally, while emphasizing feeding and grazing innovations, marketing strategies, breeding programs, and digital technologies. Adoption of best practices, modern technologies and innovations is crucial for the sector's future sustainability and resilience.

Technical inefficiency of Dutch vegetable farms: Specific-input analyses

Emmanuel Ahovi et al.

Summary: This study examines the technical efficiency of Dutch indoor vegetable farms during the period of 2006-2016 using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and bootstrap truncated regression model. The results show that technical inefficiency exists in energy, materials, pesticides, and fertilizers inputs among indoor growers, and enhancing farmers' ability to reduce this inefficiency can improve farm competitiveness and mitigate environmental impacts.

What are the options for farm succession? Models for farm business continuity

Luisa Rhoden Rech et al.

Summary: This study identifies farm business models in family and nonfamily succession, showing 13 possibilities for business continuity in farm succession. Each case is unique, with economic potential of the business, family governance form, and stakeholder involvement playing crucial roles. Having family heirs interested in taking over the business and using proper governance can help minimize conflicts and ensure successful succession.

A dynamic stochastic frontier approach with persistent and transient inefficiency and unobserved heterogeneity

Jean Joseph Minviel et al.

Summary: This article introduces a new dynamic stochastic frontier analysis framework with unobserved heterogeneity, persistent, and transient inefficiency effects, and applies it to a sample of French crop-livestock farms. The estimates provide insights into the estimation of technical efficiency scores and the analysis of the associations of contextual drivers such as public subsidies and indebtedness with technical efficiency.
