The S-layer homology domains of Paenibacillus alvei surface protein SpaA bind to cell wall polysaccharide through the terminal monosaccharide residue

Max S. G. Legg et al.

Summary: The S-layer is a widely distributed prokaryotic cell-surface structure involved in various biological processes. This study reveals the interaction between the S-layer and the cell wall structure, as well as how it adapts to accommodate longer ligands.

Adhesion force evolution of protein on the surfaces with varied hydration extent: Quantitative determination via atomic force microscopy

Yuyao Zhang et al.

Summary: The adhesion force evolution of proteins on surfaces with continuously varied hydrophobicity/hydration layer was studied using chemical force spectroscopy with AFM. The adhesion force increased non-monotonically with surface hydrophobicity in water, driven by hydrophobic attraction, with a key influence from humic acid concentration.

Summary: The study extracted surface layer protein and cell-bound exopolysaccharide from L. fermentum and evaluated their adhesive, immunomodulatory, and anti-oxidative potential. The components were found to promote bacterial adhesion and phagocytosis, and exhibited strong radical scavenging, chelating, and reducing potential.

Optimization of Encapsulation Using Milk Polar Lipid Liposomes with S-Layer Protein and Transport Study of the ACE-Inhibitory Peptide RLSFNP

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study developed a new type of nanodrug delivery material by modifying milk polar lipid (MPL) liposomes with the S-layer protein. The S-layer protein-modified MPL liposomes showed improved stability, resistance to external interference, and enhanced performance in promoting absorption and delayed release, indicating potential for effective delivery of therapeutic proteins and peptides.

New Nanocarrier System for Liposomes Coated with Lactobacillus acidophilus S-Layer Protein to Improve Leu-Gln-Pro-Glu Absorption through the Intestinal Epithelium

Xiaoxiao Jiang et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel liposome nanocarrier system by coating liposomes with Lactobacillus acidophilus S-layer protein to improve the intestinal absorption of a cholesterol-lowering peptide. The results showed that the SLP-coated liposomes had better sustained release properties, gastrointestinal tolerance, and increased retention time in mice intestine. Transepithelial transport experiment demonstrated significantly improved transshipment of the peptide after being embedded by liposomes and coated with SLP, providing a potential drug delivery system for enhancing peptide absorption in the intestine.
