Intimate partner violence during the perinatal period by disability status: Findings from a United States population-based analysis

Jeanne L. Alhusen et al.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) during the perinatal period among respondents with self-reported disability to those without disability. The findings revealed that respondents with disabilities experienced higher rates of IPV both before and during pregnancy. This highlights the increased risk for adverse maternal, neonatal, and infant health outcomes among individuals with disabilities. Screening for IPV and providing appropriate support and resources are crucial for women with disabilities during the perinatal period.

Summary: Perinatal depression (PND) is a major depressive episode during pregnancy or within 4 weeks after childbirth up to a year, with risk factors including stressful life events, history of depression, poor social support, unplanned pregnancies, poor relationship quality, abuse, and low socioeconomic status. It has negative effects on mothers' quality of life, intimate relationships, birth outcomes, breastfeeding likelihood, and long-term effects on children's cognitive and emotional development. No nationally representative study has examined socioeconomic and racial/ethnic differences in PND yet.

Stressful life events and postpartum depressive symptoms among women with disabilities

Edward J. Booth et al.

Summary: Women with disabilities have a higher prevalence of postpartum depressive symptoms compared to women without disabilities, with stressful life events playing a more significant role in this group. Particularly, relational and traumatic stressful life events increase the odds of postpartum depressive symptoms among women with disabilities. Early screening and appropriate care are essential in mitigating the harmful effects of depression in this population.
