A man without money getting a sexual partner? It doesn't exist in our community: male partners' perspectives on transactional sexual relationships in Uganda and Eswatini

J. Pulerwitz et al.

Summary: Research has shown that male partners of adolescent girls and young women often view transactional relationships as a means to establish connections, with many providing money or gifts. While some men find this arrangement undesirable, others perceive it as a norm within their communities. Young women are often seen as actively seeking transactional sex for material goods, with some being economically manipulated into relationships. Additionally, conflicts with longer term partners may drive some men to seek out younger, more compliant partners.

Regional heterogeneity in violence and individual characteristics associated with recent transactional sex among Ugandan girls and young women: A national and regional analysis of data from the Violence Against Children and Youth Survey

Caroline Stamatakis et al.

Summary: This study in Uganda found significant associations between recent transactional sex (TS) among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) with factors such as marriage, family wealth, friendship, orphanhood, and sexual debut. In high HIV burden regions, AGYW who experienced violence in the home or community had higher odds of recent TS. The study suggests a need for comprehensive violence prevention in HIV epidemic control efforts targeting persons engaged in TS.

The additive and interactive effects of parental harsh discipline and boys' gender-related traits on boys' externalizing problem behaviors

Yuzhu Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that both parental harsh discipline and boys' gender-related traits were independently related to boys' externalizing problem behaviors, but there were no significant interactions between the two. Therefore, it is recommended to reduce parental harsh discipline and provide effective advice and problem-solving strategies for boys with higher levels of masculinity and lower levels of femininity.
