Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the associations between hospital participation in Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) and 30-day total episode and post-acute care spending for lower extremity joint replacement (LEJR), coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), and colectomy. The results showed that BPCI participation was significantly associated with reduced spending for LEJR and colectomy, but not for CABG.

Three-Year Impact Of Stratification In The Medicare Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program

Summary: The Medicare Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) penalizes hospitals with high readmission rates. A new approach has been implemented to stratify hospitals and evaluate performance within each stratum rather than in the national cohort. The impact on hospitals caring for vulnerable populations has not been studied. However, the study found that the stratification by proportion of dual enrollees was associated with penalty reductions at rural hospitals and hospitals serving Black and Hispanic or Latino patients.

Association of Participation in the Oncology Care Model With Medicare Payments, Utilization, Care Delivery, and Quality Outcomes

Summary: This study evaluates the association of the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Oncology Care Model (OCM), an alternative payment model for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, with changes in Medicare spending, utilization, quality, and patient experience during the first 3 years of the OCM (2016-2018). The results show that the OCM was significantly associated with modestly lower Medicare episode payments that did not cover the costs of care coordination or performance-based payments, with no significant differences in most utilization, quality, or patient experience outcomes.
