Simultaneous determination of zircon crystallisation age and temperature: Common thermal evolution of mafic magmatic enclaves and host granites in the Kurobegawa granite, central Japan

Takashi Yuguchi et al.

Summary: Simultaneous determination of U-Pb age and titanium concentration in zircon provides insights into the history of evolved magma. In the case of the Kurobegawa granite in Japan, the study reveals similar cooling behavior between mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs) and host rocks, suggesting the emplacement age of the granitic pluton.

Trace-element composition of zircon in Kofu and Tanzawa granitoids, Japan: Quantitative indicator of sediment incorporated in parent magma

Yusuke Sawaki et al.

Summary: Zircon is an important mineral for geochronologic research, and its isotopic ratios and trace elements can provide information about parent magmas. In this study, the researchers focused on sediment involvement during granitoid formation and found that the Nb/P and Ta/P ratios in zircon can be used as indicators of sediment incorporation. Additionally, the Yb/Gd ratios and Ce/P contents in zircon respond to sediment involvement.

U-Pb ages of Miocene near-trench granitic rocks of the Southwest Japan arc: implications for magmatism related to hot subduction

Hironao Shinjoe et al.

Summary: A new dataset of zircon U-Pb ages reveals middle Miocene igneous activity in the SW Japan arc and its relationship with adjacent geological events, indicating that middle Miocene volcanic activity had an influence on the opening of the back-arc region.

Reconstructing crustal thickness evolution from europium anomalies in detrital zircons

Ming Tang et al.

Summary: A new data compilation shows a positive correlation between zircon Eu/Eu* and crustal thickness in intermediate to felsic rocks, which has been used to infer crustal thickness. The calibration of a crustal thickness proxy based on Eu anomalies in zircons allows for the reconstruction of crustal thickness evolution in magmatic arcs and orogens. Analysis of detrital zircons from southern Tibet reveals two episodes of crustal thickening since the Cretaceous, temporally consistent with contractional deformation of sedimentary strata.

Evidence for crustal removal, tectonic erosion and flare-ups from the Japanese evolving forearc sediment provenance

Daniel Pastor-Galan et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates changes in a long-lived subduction system using detrital zircon U-Pb and Hf-isotope data from forearc units in northern Honshu, Japan. The data reveal dominant age peaks and progressive loss of older zircon populations, with Hf-isotope data showing three discrete shifts corresponding to differing degrees of isotopic enrichment. Each temporal isotopic shift is associated with the isolation of older sedimentary packages, providing evidence for rapid shifts in arc tectonics.

Crustal melting vs. fractionation of basaltic magmas: Part 2, Attempting to quantify mantle and crustal contributions in granitoids

Jean-Baptiste Jacob et al.

Summary: Granitic melts can form directly or by fractionation of mafic to intermediate magmas from the mantle. Different models apply to different regions and times, influenced by factors such as mafic magma flux, thermal gradients, and crustal conditions. The origins of granitic suites may not be fully explained by pure models, as they often contain hybrid or ambiguous rocks.

Summary: This paper discusses the two competing paradigms regarding the formation of granitic magmas and their implications, emphasizing that both views are based on a large body of evidence and propose that each of them is relevant to some portions of the Earth.
