Total Cerebral Small Vessel Disease Score and Anthropometric Indices: A Population-Based Study in Older Adults of Amerindian Ancestry

Oscar H. Del Brutto et al.

Summary: The study found significant associations between waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio - but not body mass index - and the severity of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) in older Amerindian adults living in rural Ecuador. This suggests that indices of abdominal obesity may be a better indicator of cSVD burden than BMI in this population, possibly due to their unique phenotypic characteristics.

Prevalence and Consequences of Cerebral Small Vessel Diseases: A Cross-Sectional Study Based on Community People Plotted Against 5-Year Age Strata

Ronghua Mu et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the variation tendency of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) imaging markers and total burden with aging and explore the relationship between aging, CSVD markers, and cognitive function. The results showed that the incidence of CSVD imaging markers increased with age, except for cerebral microbleeds. Furthermore, linear decline in neuropsychological function was observed with aging, and age and brain atrophy were identified as independent factors affecting neuropsychological function.

Brain deep medullary veins on 3-T MRI in a population-based cohort

Dong-Hui Ao et al.

Summary: The study found that the number of cerebral deep medullary veins (DMVs) decreases with age and is not associated with traditional vascular risk factors, but is related to brain atrophy. However, DMVs are not associated with other MRI markers of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) or the risk of stroke.

The Prevalence and Risk Factors of Cerebral Microbleeds: A Community-Based Study in China

Qi Luo et al.

Summary: This study in Shanghai Wuliqiao community found a prevalence of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) among stroke-free elderly in China was 12.6%, increasing with age. Most CMBs were located in the deep/mixed region and patients generally had 1-2 microbleeds. In addition to cardiovascular risk factors and genetic factors, hypertension and lacunar infarction also increased the risk of deep/mixed CMBs.

Periodic Limb Movements Syndrome in Patients With Cerebral Small Vessel Disease: Protocol for a Prospective Observational Study

Ekaterina Spektor et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the impact of periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) on cognitive function and disease progression in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD). The study will utilize methods such as nocturnal polysomnography, self-reported questionnaires, brain MRI, and cognitive assessment to compare the progression of cognitive dysfunction and cSVD markers between patients with PLMS and controls. It is expected that patients with PLMS will exhibit faster cognitive decline and progression of cSVD markers.

Summary: This study found an association between low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and structural brain changes and cognitive dysfunction in rural-dwelling older adults in China, but the link between low HDL-C and cognitive aging phenotypes does not appear to be mediated by brain structure.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the burden of WML and its associated risk factors in different Asian societies. The prevalence of moderate-to-severe WML was highest in stroke/TIA patients, with Bandung Indonesia showing the highest prevalence. Hypertension and hyperlipidemia were significant risk factors for WML, which was negatively associated with cognitive performance in all groups.

Natural history of silent lacunar infarction: 10-year follow-up of a community-based prospective study of 0.5 million Chinese adults

Zilong Hao et al.

Summary: This study compared the 5-year risks of recurrent stroke and all-cause mortality for silent lacunar infarct (LACI) vs symptomatic LACI in Chinese adults with no history of stroke or ischemic heart disease. The results showed that the prognosis of cases with silent LACI was comparable to symptomatic LACI, highlighting the need for further randomized trials to assess the efficacy and safety of established treatments for ischemic stroke in cases with silent LACI.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with cerebral small vessel disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Una Clancy et al.

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis, associations were found between the severity of white matter hyperintensity (WMH) and apathy, while subjective cognitive complaints were not significantly associated with WMH. Some studies had low risk of bias, indicating a need for further research on the association between anxiety, dementia-related behaviors, emotional lability, and psychosis with cerebral small vessel disease.
