Rock grain-scale mechanical properties influencing hydraulic fracturing using Hydro-GBM approach

Lie Kong et al.

Summary: Rock cracking and fracturing have significant implications for geological applications. This study investigates the influence of rock grain-scale mechanical parameters on fluid-driven cracking behaviors and proposes a formulation to eliminate the mismatch between experimental and simulated shear cracking. The results provide valuable insights into the effects of rock grain-scale properties on hydraulic fractures and guide the selection and calibration of micro mechanical parameters in future modeling.

Fatigue Behavior of Granite Subjected to Cyclic Hydraulic Fracturing and Observations on Pressure for Fracture Growth

SungGyu Jung et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the fatigue behavior of granite under cyclic hydraulic fracturing, finding that fatigue life increases exponentially with decreasing maximum pressure, lower energy AEs are induced by cyclic injection compared to continuous injection, and there is a lower probability of observing large-amplitude AEs at lower pressures. The damage process during cyclic injection is quantified with cumulative AE energy, showing a three-stage process leading to failure, and the pressure required for fracture initiation decreases similar to field reopening pressures.

Cyclic Water Injection Potentially Mitigates Seismic Risks by Promoting Slow and Stable Slip of a Natural Fracture in Granite

Yinlin Ji et al.

Summary: The study investigates the activation of a critically stressed natural fracture in granite under pressure-controlled and volume-controlled monotonic and cyclic water injection. Results show that cyclic injection can lead to aseismic fracture slip at smaller peak slip rates compared to monotonic injection, but continued injection after an unstable shut-in stage could result in rapid and unstable fracture slip.

Relaxation damage control via fatigue-hydraulic fracturing in granitic rock as inferred from laboratory-, mine-, and field-scale experiments

Arno Zang et al.

Summary: Controlling induced seismicity in energy technologies is crucial for improving reservoir safety and reducing seismic hazards. By optimizing radiated seismicity and hydraulic energy during fluid injection, using cyclic- and pulse-pumping schemes, significant impacts on fracture patterns and seismic events can be achieved. Fatigue hydraulic fracturing concept may explain rock behavior during hydraulic fatigue, converting hydraulic energy into rock damage and fracturing.

Fluid-driven micro-cracking behaviour of crystalline rock using a coupled hydro-grain-based discrete element method

Lie Kong et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a coupled hydro-grain-based discrete element model to explore fluid-driven micro-cracking of crystalline rock. Laboratory-scale fracturing cases over granite are simulated, revealing unique behaviors such as non-symmetrical propagation, zipper mode initiation, and generations of cracks. The cracking mode is dominated by tension failure, with variations in crack orientation and aperture influenced by in-situ stresses.

Effects of Aqueous and Acid Erosions on the Cracking Behavior of Sandstone Captured by High-Speed Camera During Semi-circular Bend (SCB) Tests

Ni Xie et al.

Summary: This experimental work investigates water-rock reactions in Chongqing sandstone, observing how water and acid erosions affect the mechanical properties of the stone. The study shows that distilled water has a more severe weakening effect on the sandstone compared to acid solutions, and chemical reactions mainly affect cementation and grain boundaries, promoting crack propagation. High-speed camera observations reveal varying crack propagation rates under different conditions.

The Role of Rock Matrix Permeability in Controlling Hydraulic Fracturing in Sandstones

Marco Fazio et al.

Summary: A concomitant effect of hydraulic fracturing experiments is fluid permeation into the rock matrix, which can slow down or impede the fracturing process. Low permeability or the use of an inner silicon rubber sleeve can promote hydraulic fracturing and reduce seismic activity.
