Synthesis, classification and properties of hydrogels: their applications in drug delivery and agriculture

Faisal Khan et al.

Summary: Absorbent polymers or hydrogel polymer materials have enhanced water retention capacity and are widely used in agriculture and medicine. Water gel control release of bioactive molecules is one of the major areas of drug research. Hydrogel delivery systems could lead to therapeutically favorable outcomes for drug delivery. They can provide different therapeutic agents including macromolecular drugs, small molecule drugs, and cells for controlled release of molecules. Due to their degradability and physical properties, hydrogels can be used as a platform to study chemical and physical interactions with encapsulated drugs for controlled release. The biodegradability of hydrogels has attracted more interest in drug delivery systems. The structure of hydrogels can be broken down into non-toxic substances, confirming the excellent biocompatibility of the gel. Chemical crosslinking is a common method for forming hydrogels with mechanical strength, but it may have some toxicity. Physically cross-linked hydrogels can be an alternative to toxic crosslinkers. Stimulus-responsive hydrogels formed from natural and synthetic polymers can change properties under external stimuli such as temperature, pH, and light. Stimulus-responsive hydrogels have applications in biomedicine, including drug delivery and tissue regeneration. They can show controlled and sustained drug release when loaded with multiple drugs. Integrating stimulus-responsive hydrogels into textiles can improve properties like moisture retention, aesthetics, and comfort. This review explores stimulus-responsive hydrogels in drug delivery systems and their applications in agriculture.
