Local vs. nonlocal integral elasticity-based phase field models including surface tension and simulations of single and two variant martensitic transformations and twinning

Mahdi Javanbakht et al.

Summary: This paper investigates single and two variant martensitic transformations, including twinning, using the phase field approach. The study compares the local and nonlocal models with different kernels and analyzes various phase transformation examples. The results show that the compensated TP kernel (CTP) performs better than the well-known two-phase (TP) kernel and the local model in resolving certain issues.

Crystal plasticity including a phase-field deformation twinning model for the high-rate deformation of cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine

Milovan Zecevic et al.

Summary: In this study, a new finite strain thermomechanical model was developed for the high-rate deformation of β-HMX. The crystal plasticity model, which incorporates deformation twinning, was applied to simulate plate impact experiments. The simulations showed that the growth of twinning decreases with increasing distance from the impact surface, and the interface velocity does not significantly differ with or without phase-field twinning. These results suggest that the importance of twinning in β-HMX cannot be accurately determined using traditional loading configurations and diagnostics.

Deformation twinning as a displacive transformation: Finite-strain phase-field model of coupled twinning and crystal plasticity

Mohsen Rezaee-Hajidehi et al.

Summary: A finite-strain phase-field model is proposed to study the coupled deformation twinning and crystal plasticity. Twinning is treated as a volume-preserving stretch and a micromorphic formulation is employed. In the model, each pair of conjugate twinning systems is represented by a single twin deformation variant, and a single order parameter is used to consistently describe the two conjugate twinning systems.

Summary: Deformation twinning and detwinning in extruded Mg-4Al were investigated using in-situ SEMDIC experiments and CPFE simulation. The study found a strong correlation between twin growth/shrinkage and the Schmid Factor. The CPFE model accurately captured the statistical aspects of both twinning and detwinning.

Polyphase crystal plasticity for high strain rate: Application to twinning and retwinning in tantalum

Summary: The transition of strain response from a plasticity dominated regime to a twinning dominated regime in tantalum with increasing strain rate is investigated. A polyphase crystal plasticity model, combining a Phase Field-Reaction Pathway formalism and a dislocation-based crystal plasticity model, is used. The simulations highlight the dual role of plasticity in the formation of twin variants.

The effects of stress, temperature and facet structure on growth of {10(1)over-bar2} twins in Mg: A molecular dynamics and phase field study

Mingyu Gong et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of structure, stress, and temperature on the mobility of facets bounding twin domains in Mg, focusing on the growth kinetics of {10 (1) over bar2} twins. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the relationship between interface structures, stress, temperature, and mobility. The research also emphasizes the significance of stress relaxation mediated by misfit dislocations on the mobility of basal-prismatic interfaces.

Summary: This study introduces a mathematical model that couples crystal plasticity material model with phase field twinning model to investigate the deformation mechanism of twinning in crystals. The phase field order parameter is introduced to quantify twinning-induced shear strain and crystal reorientation, while a Lie algebra averaging technique is used to determine the Schmid tensor.

Nonlocal integral elasticity based phase field modelling and simulations of nanoscale thermal- and stress-induced martensitic transformations using a boundary effect compensation kernel

Hooman Danesh et al.

Summary: This paper presents a nonlocal elasticity based phase field model for thermal and stress induced martensitic phase transformations at the nanoscale, with the introduction of the compensated two-phase kernel to address previous limitations. The thermal induced interface propagation is found to be similar for all cases, while at equilibrium temperature, different kernels lead to varied interface structures and stress fields.

Summary: Using classical molecular dynamics simulations, this study investigates the influence of interface morphology on the austenite to ferrite phase transformation in iron. The findings reveal the impact of interface morphology on atomic displacements, stacking fault nucleation, and interface mobility during the phase transformation process. Additionally, the study highlights the opposite temperature dependence trends of interface mobility between flat and ledged boundaries.
