Effects of plasticity-induced martensitic transformation and grain refinement on the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of a metastable high entropy alloy

Shubhrodev Bhowmik et al.

Summary: This study investigated the tailoring of phase content and grain structure of a high entropy alloy to enhance its strength through rolling, friction stir processing, and compression. The results showed that the adaptive phase stability of the selected HEA, along with grain refinement and manipulation of phase fractions, effectively improved the material's strength. By optimizing the processing parameters, including tool rotation rate during FSP, the alloy achieved a peak ultimate tensile strength of approximately 1850 MPa. Furthermore, the study discussed the role of texture, grain size, and phase content in the transformation behavior during compression.

Experimental characterization and crystal plasticity modeling for predicting load reversals in AA6016-T4 and AA7021-T79

Sowmya Daroju et al.

Summary: The contribution of microstructural-level phenomena to reverse loading behavior in metal alloys is still an active and debated area of research. Accurate prediction of nonlinear effects, the Bauschinger effect, and changes in hardening rates during reverse loading is necessary for modeling deformation and springback in forming operations. This study applied a crystal plasticity model to predict and interpret reverse loading in two aluminum alloys, revealing the contribution of different microscale phenomena.

Summary: In this study, the deformation behavior of beryllium during compressive loading and cross-reloading is investigated using experimental measurements and crystal plasticity modeling. The comparison between experimental data and model predictions reveals that the shifts in active deformation mechanisms are primarily responsible for drastic changes in the flow stress.

Summary: This paper presents a mathematical procedure for invertible microstructure-property linkages for orthorhombic polycrystalline metals using the generalized spherical harmonics (GSH) spectral basis. The procedure allows for the computation of property closures and enables the simulation of microstructurally heterogeneous components under thermo-mechanical loadings in a computationally efficient manner. The developed framework has been demonstrated using alpha-uranium as a case study.

Effect of powder reuse on tensile, compressive, and creep strength of Inconel 718 fabricated via laser powder bed fusion

Shubhrodev Bhowmik et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of powder reusing on the tensile, compressive, and creep strength of Inconel 718 fabricated via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The results show that samples made from reused powder are slightly stronger in tension and compression, and exhibit serrated yielding at higher temperatures compared to samples made of virgin powder. The creep strength is higher for samples made from virgin powder up to 650 degrees C but not at 700 degrees C. The results are explained based on factors such as dislocation density, dispersion hardening, and solute distribution and precipitates. The creep parameters are estimated and refined using the measured data and the Mukherjee-Bird-Dorn equation.

Stress-assisted (γ→α′) and strain-induced (γ→ε→α′) phase transformation kinetics laws implemented in a crystal plasticity model for predicting strain path sensitive deformation of austenitic steels

Zhangxi Feng et al.

Summary: This paper formulates kinetics laws for stress-assisted and strain-induced austenite to martensite transformation within a crystal plasticity framework, enabling modeling of strain path sensitive elasto-plastic deformation of austenitic steels. The models take into account the evolution of crystallographic texture and directionality of deformation mechanisms in constituent phases, predicting the deformation behavior of metastable austenitic steels while incorporating a new numerical feature to model the epsilon-martensite morphology. Through calibrating with experimental data, the implementation successfully predicts stress-strain response, texture, and phase fractions of different phases.

Summary: Crystal plasticity models were developed using meso-scale descriptions of deformation mechanisms with the activation governed by crystallography and calibrated model parameters; a multi-objective genetic algorithm and robust objective functions were used to identify hardening parameters and incorporate texture into the optimization approach; the approach not only accurately predicted texture evolution, but also showed promising applications in the study of plasticity models for different metallic materials.

Summary: This paper introduces a numerical method to embed any value of the power-law exponent in a crystal plasticity finite element model, reflecting the true material strain-rate sensitivity, and successfully applies it to predict the complex strain-rate sensitive response of AZ31 Mg alloy. Calculations show that the model captures the phenomena related to the effect of changing applied strain-rate on mechanical response.
