A novel crystal plasticity model incorporating transformation induced plasticity for a wide range of strain rates and temperatures

D. S. Connolly et al.

Summary: Transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) is a common effect in advanced high strength steels (AHSS) that has promising applications in the automotive industry. Accurate thermo-mechanical modeling is crucial for utilizing the improved performance of AHSS exhibiting the TRIP effect. This study develops a novel crystal plasticity formulation that incorporates strain-induced martensitic transformation, and calibrates the model for a QP3Mn alloy. The calibrated model shows good agreement with literature trends and demonstrates the importance of capturing strain-rate dependent transformation.

A Crystal Plasticity Formulation for Simulating the Formability of a Transformation Induced Plasticity Steel

Pingcheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study presents a crystal plasticity model based on micro-mechanics transformation criteria to successfully simulate the mechanical response of TRIP steel. The simulations demonstrate the significant impact of martensite transformation on improving formability, achieved by suppressing localization. Further parametric studies reveal the crucial sensitivity of controlling the timing of martensite generation for enhancing formability.

Solving Stochastic Inverse Problems for Property-Structure Linkages Using Data-Consistent Inversion and Machine Learning

Anh Tran et al.

Summary: Determining process-structure-property linkages is crucial in material science, and uncertainty quantification plays a critical role in understanding these relationships. This work proposes a stochastic inversion formulation to infer a distribution of consistent microstructures, expanding the range of feasible designs in a probabilistic manner. By combining uncertainty quantification framework with machine learning Bayesian regression model, a unique and stable solution is defined for solving stochastic inverse problems related to structure-property linkages.

Machine learning based surrogate modeling approach for mapping crystal deformation in three dimensions

Anup Pandey et al.

Summary: The machine learning based surrogate modeling method presented in this study can predict the spatially resolved 3D crystal orientation evolution of polycrystalline materials under uniaxial tensile loading. It is significantly faster than existing crystal plasticity methods and enables simulation of large volumes that would be otherwise computationally prohibitive. This approach surpasses existing ML-based modeling results by providing local 3D full-field predictions rather than just average values or being limited to 2D structures.

A crystal plasticity investigation of grain size-texture interaction in magnesium alloys

Babak Ravaji et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure-property linkages in magnesium by focusing on the interaction effects between grain size, texture, and loading orientation. The findings suggest that grain size refinement reduces extension twinning, and both grain refinement and textural weakening can decrease plastic anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry. The study offers insight into the roles of texture and grain size in the damage behavior of engineered magnesium microstructures.
