Revealing the size effect mechanism of reversible grain boundary migration in nanocrystalline coppers: Molecular dynamics simulations and a refined disconnection model

Anping Hua et al.

Summary: The reversibility of the representative Sigma 11(113) grain boundary migration in copper bicrystals under cyclic shear strongly depends on their grain sizes, with a transition mechanism from fully reversible disconnection-mediated migration to irreversible structural damage. The study also developed a refined disconnection model considering grain size to predict migration behavior and interpret the forming mechanism of disconnection pair grooving (DPG).

Grain boundary sliding model for assessing creep-fatigue life of Sn37Pb eutectic solder

Masao Sakane et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the creep-fatigue life prediction of eutectic Sn37Pb solder, with experiments conducted at 313 K using various waveforms. Different prediction rules were used, but a new method based on grain boundary sliding rates was proposed due to its close relationship with creep-fatigue lives.

Grain boundary mediated plasticity: A blessing for the ductility of metallic thin films?

Jan P. Liebig et al.

Summary: The limited ductility of metallic thin films poses a challenge for MEMS and flexible electronics applications, but high ductility can be achieved through a combination of ultra-thin thickness and specific microstructure. The primary mechanisms of ductility are grain boundary sliding and grain boundary migration, which delay necking and achieve high ductility. This study opens promising prospects for developing ductile metallic films through microstructural engineering.

Lattice transformation in grain boundary migration via shear coupling and transition to sliding in face-centered-cubic copper

Bin Li et al.

Summary: The migration of symmetric tilt grain boundaries (GBs) in face centered cubic copper under a shear strain at 100 K was studied. Results showed that the angles between specific atomic planes could determine the mode of motion of the GB, whether it is by shear coupling, hybrid mode of shear coupling + sliding, or only GB sliding. Structural analyses revealed atomic planes behavior during shear coupling, allowing the identification of transformation units and rate-limiting factors for lattice transformation.

Revealing extreme twin-boundary shear deformability in metallic nanocrystals

Qi Zhu et al.

Summary: The research reveals the unprecedented shear deformability of twins in nanocrystals, with extreme shear deformability up to 364% through TB sliding. The study shows that sliding-induced plasticity is orientation-dependent and relies critically on geometric inhomogeneities, which has implications for improving metal processing by severe plastic deformation.
