Fungal Infections and Nail Psoriasis: An Update

Aikaterini Kyriakou et al.

Summary: The relationship between psoriasis and onychomycosis is still controversial, but nail involvement and abnormal blood vessels in psoriasis may weaken the natural defense against fungal infection. Treatment with immunosuppressive drugs may also increase the risk of onychomycosis.

Analysis of Boswellic Acid Contents and Related Pharmacological Activities of Frankincense-Based Remedies That Modulate Inflammation

Friedemann Boerner et al.

Summary: Frankincense extracts have been widely used in traditional folk medicine and are considered promising anti-inflammatory remedies in Western countries, yet commercially available frankincense nutraceuticals vary significantly in composition and quality, particularly in the content of boswellic acids. Studies have shown that high-quality frankincense extracts exhibit powerful anti-inflammatory effects against multiple targets, which can be attributed to the presence of boswellic acids as bioactive ingredients.

Overcoming the hydrophilicity of bacterial nanocellulose: Incorporation of the lipophilic coenzyme Q10 using lipid nanocarriers for dermal applications

Yaser Alkhatib et al.

Summary: The study successfully incorporated the lipophilic CoQ10 into BNC using various post-synthesis techniques. Penetration studies showed distribution of CoQ10 in different layers of skin. Using lipidic colloidal carriers, water-insoluble drugs can be loaded onto BNC, offering new possibilities for applications in pharmacy and medicine.

Bacterial cellulose/glycolic acid/glycerol composite membrane as a system to deliver glycolic acid for anti-aging treatment

Bricard Mbituyimana et al.

Summary: This study presents a topical controlled drug delivery system based on bacterial cellulose membrane, glycolic acid, and glycerol to reduce the side effects of glycolic acid on the skin while maintaining its prolonged therapeutic effect. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of glycerol increases the malleability and flexibility of the membrane, leading to a slower release of glycolic acid. Moreover, the composite membrane effectively stimulates endogenous collagen synthesis and promotes long-term cell adhesion, spreading, and proliferation.
