HPS protects the liver against steatosis, cell death, inflammation, and fibrosis in mice with steatohepatitis

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that hepassocin (HPS) has beneficial effects on the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) by inhibiting oxidative stress. HPS expression levels are regulated in high-fat diet and methionine- and choline-deficient diet-fed mice, as well as in genetically obese mice. HPS deficiency exacerbates liver pathology and insulin resistance, while HPS administration improves liver phenotypes and insulin resistance in both HPS knockout and wild-type mice.

Thapsigargin-From Traditional Medicine to Anticancer Drug

Agata Jaskulska et al.

Summary: Thapsigargin is a sesquiterpene lactone found in Mediterranean plants, traditionally used in folk medicine for treating rheumatic pain, lung diseases, and female infertility. It has been discovered to induce apoptosis by inhibiting the SERCA pump, making it a potential antineoplastic agent, but its high toxicity to normal cells hampers its development.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress in biological processing and disease

Ali Riza Koksal et al.

Summary: The proper folding of cellular proteins is essential for their functions, with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) playing a key role. However, challenges such as ER stress can lead to accumulation of misfolded proteins, triggering the unfolded protein response (UPR) and potentially affecting inflammatory responses and cell apoptosis.

Recombinant Human HPS Protects Mice and Nonhuman Primates from Acute Liver Injury

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of pharmaceutical-grade recombinant human HPS on acute liver injury in mice and monkeys. The results showed that HPS treatment significantly reduced hepatocyte death and inflammation, attenuated the development of acute liver failure, and promoted hepatocyte proliferation while preventing apoptosis and oxidative stress. The study suggested the potential of HPS as a novel drug for the treatment of acute liver injury.

The Role of the Unfolded Protein Response on Renal Lipogenesis in C57BL/6 Mice

Elizabeth Figueroa-Juarez et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that pharmacological induction of ER stress in mice leads to kidney structural abnormalities, in situ lipid synthesis, renal lipid accumulation, and functional alterations. Future strategies should focus on targeting renal ER stress to prevent kidney damage and metabolic diseases.

FOXA3 induction under endoplasmic reticulum stress contributes to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Caizhi Liu et al.

Summary: The study identified FOXA3 as a key bridging molecule connecting ER stress and NAFLD progression, with its deficiency alleviating fatty liver. Increased levels of FOXA3 were found in the livers of obese mice and patients with NAFLD, suggesting FOXA3 as a potential therapeutic target for fatty liver disease.
