Physiological and comparative transcriptome analyses reveal the mechanisms underlying waterlogging tolerance in a rapeseed anthocyanin-more mutant

Li-Na Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological changes and transcriptomes of rapeseed in response to waterlogging stress. The anthocyanin-rich mutant showed stronger tolerance to waterlogging stress compared to the cultivar. RNA-seq analysis identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to carbohydrate metabolism in the cultivar and plant hormone signal transduction in the mutant. Anthocyanin biosynthesis-related genes and hormone signal transduction genes were identified as crucial genes in waterlogging tolerance. The findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying increased anthocyanin contents and can be useful for breeding rapeseed varieties with high waterlogging tolerance.

Summary: The study quantified the losses of crop yield and production resulting from droughts and floods in China from 1982 to 2012 using the superposed epoch analysis method. The results showed that maize and soybean were most severely affected, while rice was sensitive to both droughts and floods.

The hypoxia-reoxygenation stress in plants

Jose Leon et al.

Summary: Plants are highly adaptable to changing adverse environmental conditions, particularly in response to oxygen levels which have significant impacts on growth and development. The transition from hypoxia to reoxygenation can lead to cell damage due to oxidative stress, and further research is needed to understand this process. Studying molecular events related to gene expression regulation during hypoxia and reoxygenation will be crucial for improving agricultural biotechnology in the context of global climate change.

Mechanisms of Waterlogging Tolerance in Plants: Research Progress and Prospects

Jiawei Pan et al.

Summary: Waterlogging is a major abiotic stress for plants, affecting their energy metabolism and growth processes. Plants respond by regulating their morphology, energy metabolism, hormone synthesis, and signaling pathways. Future research should focus on the effects of waterlogging on plant morphology, photosynthesis, and respiration.

No-tillage for flooded rice in Brazilian subtropical paddy fields: history, challenges, advances and perspectives

Rogerio Oliveira de Sousa et al.

Summary: No-tillage (NT) has been a major advancement in Brazilian agriculture over the past 30 years, but its adoption in lowland areas traditionally cultivated with flooded rice remains limited. NT can improve soil properties and reduce CH4 emissions, but challenges remain in managing rice straw and soil surface irregularities post-rice harvest. Plant breeding and drainage techniques may facilitate the expansion of NT in southern Brazil lowlands.
