Tris(tetramethylguanidinyl)phosphine: The Simplest Non-ionic Phosphorus Superbase and Strongly Donating Phosphine Ligand

Florenz Buss et al.

Summary: The synthesis and properties of a novel tris(1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinyl) phosphine P(tmg)(3) with exceptional electron donor properties have been reported. This phosphine readily forms transition metal complexes with gold, palladium, and rhodium, and can also form zwitterionic Lewis base adducts with carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Additionally, a complete series of phosphine chalcogenides was prepared from the reaction of P(tmg)(3) with N2O and elemental chalcogens.

How to Predict the pKa of Any Compound in Any Solvent

Michael Busch et al.

Summary: The acid-base properties of molecules in nonaqueous solvents are crucial in various fields of chemistry, but our knowledge on the pK(a) values is limited. This paper presents a computational method to predict pK(a) values in any solvent, using only experimental pK(a) of a reference compound in water and quantum-chemical calculations. The method is tested and validated by computing proton solvation energy in different solvents and comparing the pK(a) values of simple compounds. The results show that the method is robust and efficient.

Determination of the absolute solvation free energy and enthalpy of the proton in solutions

Alhadji Malloum et al.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of absolute solvation energies of solutes in solution and methods for evaluating these energies. The study shows that these absolute solvation energies are crucial for determining the acids proton dissociation constant of organic compounds, as well as for the development of continuum solvation models and force fields. While the absolute solvation energies of solutes cannot be determined experimentally, they can be assessed through various methods.

Phosphorus-Containing Superbases: Recent Progress in the Chemistry of Electron-Abundant Phosphines and Phosphazenes

Robin F. Weitkamp et al.

Summary: The renaissance of Bronsted superbases is based on their ability to undergo various chemical transformations under mild conditions. Four major factors can be adjusted to tune their basicity selectively, including the nature of the basic center, electron donation by substituents, charge delocalization, and energy gain by hydrogen bonding. The appearance of neutral electron-rich phosphine and phosphazene bases in literature over the past decades has made them indispensable as auxiliary bases in deprotonation processes. Their applications in catalysis and coordination chemistry have also gained widespread interest.
