Plasma electrolytic oxidation as an effective tool for production of copper incorporated bacteriostatic coatings on Ti-15Mo alloy

Katarzyna Lesniak-Ziolkowska et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the plasma electrolytic oxidation treatment of Ti-15Mo alloy surfaces with the addition of copper-based additives to produce oxide coatings with bacteriostatic and cytocompatible properties. The highest copper concentration was detected in the oxide layer obtained from a PEO suspension bath containing Cu3(PO4)2 and Ca3(PO4)2, while the oxide coating from a PEO bath with CuO had the lowest copper concentration. Bacterial adhesion tests showed significantly lower surface-adhered bacterial colonies on Cu-incorporated surfaces, and the materials exhibited good cytocompatibilities in tests with MG-63 osteoblast-like cells.

Multifunctional TaCu-nanotubes coated titanium for enhanced bacteriostatic, angiogenic and osteogenic properties

Shuyi Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, multifunctional tantalum copper composite nanotubes (TaCu-NTs) were coated on titanium to enhance bacteriostatic, angiogenic, and osteogenic properties. Among the coatings, TaCu2-NT released the highest amount of copper ions, showing the best antibacterial effect and superior angiogenic and osteogenic properties compared to other coatings.

Bacteriophage-mediated interference of the c-di-GMP signalling pathway in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Jeroen De Smet et al.

Summary: The phage proteins known as YIPs interfere with c-di-GMP signaling by directly targeting Pseudomonas diguanylate cyclase YfiN. This results in increased c-di-GMP production, reduced motility, and increased biofilm mass in P. aeruginosa. The phage-based mechanism of metabolic regulation through intracellular signaling interference could inspire the development of new molecules to disrupt biofilm formation in various pathogens.

In vitro and in situ abrogation of biofilm formation in E. coli by vitamin C through ROS generation, disruption of quorum sensing and exopolysaccharide production

D. P. Shivaprasad et al.

Summary: The study reveals that vitamin C demonstrates powerful antibacterial action against multidrug-resistant E. coli, affecting quorum sensing and exopolysaccharide production, as well as inducing reactive oxygen species generation. Furthermore, treated bacteria showed downregulation of biofilm signaling and regulation genes, indicating promising antimicrobial application of vitamin C in food systems.

Summary: The study indicates that using Ag2O nanoparticles as the source of silver in the PEO process is promising for fabricating Ag-doped PEO coatings with long-term antibacterial activity and acceptable cytocompatibility. The different microstructures resulting from different silver sources significantly affect the release behavior of silver ions and subsequently impact the antibacterial capabilities and cytocompatibilities of the coatings.

Approximal plaque pH lowering after sugar intake in a periodontally infected dentition

S. G. Rudiger et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of periodontal inflammation on approximal plaque pH after a sucrose rinse. Results showed a significant pH drop in periodontally diseased interdental spaces after 5 minutes, and in healthy spaces and post-surgery after 2 minutes. Probing pocket depths were significantly associated with pH change at 5 minutes post-rinsing, with a trend for delayed pH drop in dentitions with 10% or more PPD >= 5 mm.

Bilayer microstructure of antibacterial TiO2 coating on Ti6Al4V fabricated via micro-arc oxidation in W-containing electrolytes

Ruoyun Wang et al.

Summary: The excellent antibacterial activity of W-incorporated TiO2 coating is related to its strong electron storage capability, allowing the accumulation of valence-band holes to induce oxidation damage to bacterial cells. This finding provides a novel and controlled strategy for designing antibacterial coatings.

Optimization of Cu and Zn co-doped PEO titania coatings produced in a novel borate-based electrolyte for biomedical applications

Matteo Pavarini et al.

Summary: Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation is being increasingly used as a surface modification technique for medical devices to fine-tune their chemical composition and morphology. A novel alkaline electrolyte is proposed in this study to produce compact coatings with high surface porosity and a Cu- and Zn-doped titania microstructure. Systematic exploration of process parameters led to the identification of optimal conditions for producing highly homogeneous coatings with micrometric pores and doping of the outermost oxide layers. The obtained coatings exhibit optimal chemical and topographical features for potential bone-contact applications.
