The interplay between genetic variation and gene expression of the glucocorticoid receptor gene NR3C1 and blood cortisol levels on verbal memory and hippocampal volumes

Sandra van der Auwera et al.

Summary: The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis plays a major role in the physiological stress response and is linked to neurocognitive processes and memory. The genes NR3C1 and NR3C2, encoding corticoid receptors, regulate the physiological response to cortisol. In two population studies, the effects of genetic variation, gene expression, and cortisol on verbal memory and memory-associated brain volume were investigated. The results showed that NR3C1 had a direct effect on verbal memory and interacted with genetic variation and cortisol levels. However, a complex association pattern was not observed for NR3C2. The study highlights the interplay between different components of the stress response system in regulating cognition and memory.

PRC2 Inhibitors Overcome Glucocorticoid Resistance Driven by NSD2 Mutation in Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Jianping Li et al.

Summary: Mutations in the NSD2 histone methyltransferase (p.E1099K) were found to drive the relapse of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). These NSD2-mutant cells exhibited resistance to glucocorticoids, which was restored by correcting the mutation. The resistance was due to decreased expression of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and the failure of glucocorticoids to activate GR expression. The use of PRC2 inhibitors reversed the glucocorticoid resistance by restoring GR levels and activation of proapoptotic genes, providing a potential therapeutic approach for relapsed ALL associated with NSD2 mutation.

Corticosterone induces discrete epigenetic signatures in the dorsal and ventral hippocampus that depend upon sex and genotype: focus on methylated Nr3c1 gene

Salvatore G. Caradonna et al.

Summary: In this study, the genomic effects of glucocorticoids on the dorsal and ventral hippocampus were investigated in male and female mice. The results showed that there were significant differences in gene expression and methylation patterns between males and females, as well as between different subregions of the hippocampus.

The Effect of Music on Livestock: Cattle, Poultry and Pigs

Patrycja Ciborowska et al.

Summary: The effect of music on livestock, including cattle, poultry, and pigs, is significant in reducing stress levels and improving production. Proper selection of music genre, intensity, and tempo can enhance welfare and productivity. Music therapy has been found to positively influence animal health and well-being in intensive production systems.
