Inhibition of myeloid-derived suppressive cell function with all-trans retinoic acid enhanced anti-PD-L1 efficacy in cervical cancer

Yun Liang et al.

Summary: PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor treatments are not very effective in advanced cervical cancer patients. However, a study has shown that all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) can differentiate myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) into mature myeloid cells. This research aimed to investigate whether ATRA could enhance PD-L1 blockade-mediated tumor immunotherapy by suppressing the function of MDSCs. The results showed that ATRA effectively abrogated the suppressive activity of MDSCs and enhanced the efficacy of anti-PD-L1 cancer immunotherapy in cervical cancer.

Critical immunosuppressive effect of MDSC-derived exosomes in the tumor microenvironment

Mohammad H. Rashid et al.

Summary: MDSC-derived exosomes carry proteins that play a crucial role in tumor growth, invasion, angiogenesis, and immunomodulation. They are capable of hyper-activating or exhausting CD8 T-cells and inducing activation-induced cell death. In vivo experiments showed a depletion of CD8 T-cells and a reduction in pro-inflammatory M1-macrophages in the spleen after treatment with MDSC exosomes.

Receptor activator of NF-κB mediates podocyte injury in diabetic nephropathy

Guibao Ke et al.

Summary: The expression of Receptor activator of NF-kappa B (RANK) is increased in podocytes of patients with diabetic nephropathy. Mouse models of podocyte-specific RANK depletion and overexpression showed that RANK depletion alleviated the development of kidney diseases, while RANK overexpression aggravated the condition. The findings suggest that RANK mediates the development of diabetic nephropathy by promoting glomerular oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokine production.
