Sound absorption of porous materials perforated with holes having gradually varying radii

Xuewei Liu et al.

Summary: A multiscale theoretical model and a finite element model were established to investigate the sound absorption of porous materials with holes of gradually varying radii. Experimental measurements were conducted to validate the models, and the results showed that the radius of the perforation holes and their shapes play a key role in improving the sound absorption performance of the materials. This study provides helpful guidance for enhancing sound absorption of microporous materials through multiscale design approach.

Perfect low-frequency sound absorption of rough neck embedded Helmholtz resonators

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this paper, an acoustic metamaterial composed of rough neck embedded Helmholtz resonators is proposed to achieve perfect sound absorption in the low-frequency range. Experimental measurement and numerical simulation validate a theoretical model developed to predict the performance of the designed resonator, showing a 20.2% increase in acoustic absorption peak value and a corresponding shift in peak position to a lower frequency. This work extends the traditional channel sound absorption theory and provides guidance for the structural design of broadband low-frequency sound-absorbing metamaterials.

Ultralight micro-perforated sandwich panel with hierarchical honeycomb core for sound absorption

Wei He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the superior sound absorption performance of ultralight micro-perforated sandwich panels with double-layer hierarchical honeycomb core. Theoretical model predictions and numerical simulations validate the physical mechanisms underlying sound absorption, with systematic parametric study revealing optimal structural parameters for maximizing sound absorption. Viscous dissipation of air inside micro-perforations and around inlet/outlet regions is shown to dominate sound absorption, while the proposed hierarchical construction offers improved load-bearing capacity and significantly enhanced sound absorption across a wide frequency range compared to panels with regular honeycomb core.

Broadband low-frequency sound absorbing metastructures based on impedance matching coiled-up cavity

Yiyang Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents a sound absorbing metastructure based on micro-perforated panel (MPP) and impedance matching coiled-up cavity (IMCC), which greatly expands the low-frequency working bandwidth within a deep sub-wavelength thickness. The impedance matching reduces the acoustic reactance variation with frequency, leading to broader low-frequency bandwidth. Theoretical predictions coincide well with numerical and experimental results, contributing to expanding design freedom for manipulating low-frequency waves.
