Crystal-plasticity modeling of phase transformation-viscoplasticity coupling in high-temperature shape memory alloys

Pawan S. Chaugule et al.

Summary: This study establishes a theoretical framework to explain the coupling between phase transformation and viscoplasticity in HTSMAs during actuation, simulating the alteration in functional properties and generation of irrecoverable deformations. By simulating the response of single crystals and polycrystals, the anisotropic and isotropic responses were captured at different scales.

Summary: The study found that the fatigue life of GH742 superalloy is significantly affected by mean stress and stress amplitude. Tensile ratcheting strain increases with the number of cycles, and multiple fatigue cracks initiate from surface inclusions, crystallographic facets, and slip bands.

A universal constitutive model for hybrid stress-strain controlled creep-fatigue deformation

Tianyu Zhang et al.

Summary: Due to stress relaxation, it is challenging to obtain creep-dominated data using conventional strain-controlled creep-fatigue interaction (CCFI) tests. To overcome this deficiency, a novel hybrid stress-strain controlled creep-fatigue interaction (HCFI) loading is developed, which can control the ratio between fatigue damage and creep damage. Extensive comparisons of two CFI responses provide a better understanding of the newly proposed HCFI loading.

Direct comparison of microstructure-sensitive fatigue crack initiation via crystal plasticity simulations and in situ high-energy X-ray experiments

Summary: This paper introduces a methodology to validate the location of microstructure-sensitive fatigue crack initiation as predicted by crystal plasticity finite element simulations using high-energy X-ray diffraction and tomography experiments. The results show an unambiguous one-to-one correlation between the location of failure predicted using extreme values of failure metrics and the experimentally observed location of crack-initiation for models with statistical twin instantiations.

A Lattice-misfit-dependent Micromechanical Approach in Ni-based Single Crystal Superalloys

Jean-Briac Le Graverend et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of lattice misfit and microstructural states on the macro-scale performance of Ni-based single crystal superalloys. A micromechanical model was developed that incorporates lattice-misfit-dependent isotropic hardening for different phases. Finite-element simulations of strain-controlled monotonic tensile and cyclic tests on realistic 3D phase-field microstructures revealed that larger natural lattice misfits lead to smaller macroscopic yield stress and strain hardening. Additionally, a more pronounced rafted microstructure results in decreased stress triaxiality at the microscale.

Dislocation density based crystal plasticity model incorporating the effect of precipitates in IN718 under monotonic and cyclic deformation

Sukumar Agaram et al.

Summary: A crystal plasticity model based on dislocation density has been developed to analyze the cyclic softening induced by precipitates in IN718. The model effectively simulates the macroscopic mechanical response under different loading conditions, with predictions showing good agreement with experimental data. Sensitivity analyses were performed to investigate the influence of grain size, reversible dislocations, and precipitate size.
