Redox-related biomarkers in human cardiovascular disease-classical footprints and beyond

Andreas Daiber et al.

Summary: Global epidemiological studies highlight the significance of chronic non-communicable diseases like atherosclerosis and metabolic disorders in premature mortality and morbidity, with cardiovascular diseases such as ischemic heart disease contributing significantly to the global disease burden and socioeconomic health costs. Research demonstrates a link between oxidative stress markers and major cardiovascular diseases, emphasizing the role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in conditions like hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes. In vivo redox biomarkers are discussed for their clinical relevance, while the potential prognostic value and limitations of these markers are critically examined.

Urinary carboxylic acid metabolites as possible novel biomarkers of exposures to alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Yan Lin et al.

Summary: This study found that traveling from Los Angeles to Beijing led to significant increases in the concentrations of alkyl-naphthalene and alkyl-phenanthrene metabolites in urine samples, with different concentration ratios indicating relative exposure contributions from petrogenic and pyrogenic sources. These results suggest that 2-PHECA to hydroxy-phenanthrene ratio could be used as an index to reflect the sources of exposure to PAHs.

Metabolomic Changes after Subacute Exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: A Natural Experiment among Healthy Travelers from Los Angeles to Beijing

Xinchen Lu et al.

Summary: By conducting metabolomics analysis on healthy young adults exposed to elevated PAHs after traveling to Beijing, it was found that 50 metabolites significantly changed 6-8 weeks later, with metabolites falling into oxidative homeostasis-related response or delayed enzymatic deinduction response. The study results suggested differential subacute effects of unsubstituted and alkylated PAHs, with some metabolite changes being reversible. Further research is needed to elucidate the role of metabolite changes reversibility in the adverse health effects of PAHs.
