Review of Hydrogen Production Techniques from Water Using Renewable Energy Sources and Its Storage in Salt Caverns

Mahdi Takach et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is becoming increasingly important in sectors such as fuel cell transportation, heat, and electricity. Underground salt caverns provide a promising method for storing hydrogen obtained from water electrolysis using renewable energy sources. This article reviews the techniques for hydrogen production and storage using excess energy from renewable sources, particularly in underground salt caverns, and discusses the feasibility of these methods. It compares competing technologies and identifies challenges in hydrogen production and storage, as well as the most promising technology. The paper also addresses the potential, technical challenges, and limitations of integrating hydrogen into the power grid.

Detection of Contaminants in Hydrogen Fuel for Fuel Cell Electrical Vehicles with Sensors-Available Technology, Testing Protocols and Implementation Challenges

Karine Arrhenius et al.

Summary: This study reviews existing sensor technologies for detecting contaminants in hydrogen and discusses their implementation at hydrogen refueling stations. It is found that there are currently no commercially available sensors for detecting all the gaseous contaminants mentioned in ISO14687:2019. The development of standardized testing protocols is needed to facilitate the development of chemical sensors for this application.

Assessment of hydrogen quality dispensed for hydrogen refuelling stations in Europe

Thor Anders Aarhaug et al.

Summary: The fuel quality assessment of hydrogen dispensed from 10 refuelling stations in Europe showed generally good quality, with some inconsistencies between laboratories. Elevated nitrogen concentrations were detected in some samples, while some samples exceeded the water concentration tolerance limit.

Review and Survey of Methods for Analysis of Impurities in Hydrogen for Fuel Cell Vehicles According to ISO 14687:2019

Claire Beurey et al.

Summary: The gaseous hydrogen used for fuel cell electric vehicles must meet stringent quality standards, and the analysis of impurities remains expensive and complex, highlighting the need for further research in this area. Novel analyzers have been developed that need to be validated according to ISO 21087:2019 requirements.

Risk Assessment of the Large-Scale Hydrogen Storage in Salt Caverns

Maria Portarapillo et al.

Summary: This study conducted a risk assessment for high-pressure hydrogen storage in salt caverns, considering the impact of bacterial contamination on gas composition. The results showed that unconfined vapor cloud explosion (UVCE) caused by hydrogen leakage is the most frequent outcome.

Challenges in hydrogen fuel sampling due to contaminant behaviour in different gas cylinders

A. S. O. Morris et al.

Summary: The increasing deployment of fuel cell electric vehicles has led to the implementation of hydrogen quality regulations to prevent performance loss, requiring operators to send representative samples of hydrogen fuel for analysis. A 4-month stability study on mixtures of ISO 14687 contaminants near thresholds in sampling cylinders showed the need for further understanding of contaminant stability.

Strategies for the sampling of hydrogen at refuelling stations for purity assessment

Karine Arrhenius et al.

Summary: This paper discusses and compares different strategies for sampling hydrogen at the nozzle, highlighting the need for comparative studies to evaluate the impact of these strategies on hydrogen fuel quality assessment. There is currently a lack of systematic comparison between the various sampling strategies, making it difficult to assess the equivalence between them. This review emphasizes the importance of standardized hydrogen fuel sampling and identifies areas for future research and development.
