Charge Relays via Dual Carbon-Actions on Nanostructured BiVO4 for High Performance Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Yuxiang Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon doping and introduction of carbon quantum dots can improve the electronic conductivity and light absorption capability of BiVO4, thus enhancing the separation and transfer of photo-generated charges. Electroplating a polyaniline layer onto the catalyst can sustain a stable photocurrent density for a long time.

Robust carbon-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles as high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction in highly acidic media

Van-Toan Nguyen et al.

Summary: A rational top-down method was proposed to construct a hybrid structure of nickel encased by a carbon shell (Ni@C) as highly active and durable non-noble metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an acidic environment. The optimized Ni@C (15%) core-shell catalyst demonstrated the highest catalytic activity with an overpotential of 85 mV and a low Tafel slope of 44 mV dec(-1). Ni@C (15%) also showed superior stability during continuous HER chronoamperometry for over 24 hours and remained active after being submerged in 2 M H2SO4 solution for 168 hours.

Yongyun Mao et al.

Summary: The designed coaxial hierarchical AgNW@Ni(OH)(2)@PPy electrode shows excellent specific capacitance and cyclic stability, leading to an all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor with ultrahigh energy density. The outstanding performance is attributed to the coaxial hierarchical design with innermost and outermost dual-electric channels.

Enhanced BiVO4 Photoanode Photoelectrochemical Performance via Borate Treatment and a NiFeOx Cocatalyst

Jingnan Zhang et al.

Summary: The combination of boron-treated BiVO4 with NiFeOx electrocatalyst (NiFeOx/B/BiVO4) demonstrates excellent performance as a photoanode under solar illumination, achieving high current density at lower voltages without the need for sacrificial agents. This is largely attributed to the presence of [B(OH)4](-) ligands and NiFeOx electrocatalysts, which enhance the separation efficiency of photoelectron-hole pairs. This work provides a promising approach for developing efficient photocatalysts for solar water splitting.

An economically sustainable bifunctional Ni@C catalyst in a solar-to-hydrogen device employing a CIGS submodule

Quang-Tung Ngo et al.

Summary: Low-cost Ni@C core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized by electrical explosion of wire method and used as a bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting. The carbon shell protected the metallic core from oxidation and provided a high surface area, leading to enhanced catalytic activity, particularly with Ni@C(15%). A stable and scalable PV-electrolysis system for water splitting based on Ni@C(15%) and all-inorganic CIGS PV was constructed, showing promising efficiency under high illumination conditions.
