Implementation of maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) in humanitarian settings: insights and experiences of humanitarian health practitioners and global technical expert meeting attendees

Neal Russell et al.

Summary: The study identifies significant obstacles to fully implementing the MPDSR process in humanitarian settings, including overburdened services, disincentives to reporting, accountability gaps, a blame approach, and politicisation of mortality. Factors unique to humanitarian contexts include concerns about health worker security and moral distress. However, successful cases demonstrate that the MPDSR process can lead to concrete actions to prevent deaths and improve understanding of complex contextual factors leading to deaths.

In the era of humanitarian crisis, young women continue to die in childbirth in Mali

Pierre Coulibaly et al.

Summary: Maternal mortality is prevalent in contexts of poverty and health system collapse, with Mali experiencing a high maternal mortality rate due to longstanding constraints in maternal health services. The central region, particularly affected by humanitarian crisis and conflict, faces a high number of maternal deaths, with reasons including hypertensive disorders/eclampsia and haemorrhage. Issues such as lack of accessible and safe blood and absence of a referral/evacuation system contribute to preventable deaths, highlighting the urgent need for improved hospital care and universal health coverage in the region.
