3D CNN-PCA: A deep-learning-based parameterization for complex geomodels

Yimin Liu et al.

Summary: Geological parameterization allows for representation of geomodels with a small set of variables, useful for data assimilation and uncertainty quantification. A deep-learning-based CNN-PCA algorithm is developed for complex 3D geomodels, using convolutional neural networks and principal component analysis. The algorithm is applied successfully for generating conditional 3D realizations for different geological scenarios, showing consistent agreement with reference models.

A deep learning-accelerated data assimilation and forecasting workflow for commercial-scale geologic carbon storage

Hewei Tang et al.

Summary: Updating pressure buildup and CO2 plume migration forecasts quickly in geologic carbon storage faces challenges. A workflow combining physical understandings with deep learning techniques can achieve history matching and reservoir forecasting with uncertainty quantification in less than an hour. By leveraging surrogate models and advanced neural networks, this workflow provides a fast and accurate solution for reservoir management.

Continuous monitoring system for safe managements of CO2 storage and geothermal reservoirs

Takeshi Tsuji et al.

Summary: The study presents a new continuous monitoring system based on small seismic sources and DAS technology, which enables continuous monitoring of multi-reservoirs in extensive areas at a relatively low cost. Field experiments showed that monitoring signals could be detected at a distance of 80 km, with identification of temporal variations having an error of less than 0.01%.

Deep-learning-based surrogate flow modeling and geological parameterization for data assimilation in 3D subsurface flow

Meng Tang et al.

Summary: A deep-learning-based surrogate model for two-phase flow in 3D subsurface formations is presented, along with a CNN-PCA procedure for parameterizing complex geomodels. By training the surrogate model and combining it with the CNN-PCA procedure, a challenging data assimilation problem involving a channelized system is successfully addressed.

Risk-based area of review estimation in overpressured reservoirs to support injection well storage facility permit requirements for CO2 storage projects

Matthew E. Burton-Kelly et al.

Summary: This paper presents a workflow for delineating a risk-based area of review to support a CO2 storage project, combining semianalytical solutions and numerical reservoir simulations. The study shows that even under the conservative assumption that the leaky wellbore is not open to a thief zone, the incremental leakage is less than 400 m(3) over 20 years.
