The impact of COVID-19 restrictions and care home strategies on residents with dementia as experienced by family carers in Italy

Ilaria Chirico et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of COVID-19 on care home residents with dementia and their family carers in Italy. The findings suggest that COVID-19 restrictions significantly affected both the residents and carers, with negative consequences on their daily lives and emotional well-being. Care home strategies, such as safe visiting and technology use, were important but not sufficient to compensate for the lack of in-person contact. Updated health strategies are needed to meet the arising needs and minimize the negative effects of future pandemics.

COVID-19 and community-based care services: Experiences of people living with dementia and their informal carers in Italy

Ilaria Chirico et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges to people with dementia and their informal carers in Italy, leading to disruptions in social services and increased stress for carers. Remote activities have provided emotional and social benefits, but a combination of virtual and face-to-face activities may better address the negative impacts of the pandemic. Public health measures should consider the holistic needs of people with dementia and ensure high-quality care during pandemic times.
