ESS-based probabilistic fatigue life assessment of steel bridges: Methodology, numerical simulation and application

Y. H. Su et al.

Summary: The selection of an appropriate S-N curve for fatigue reliability assessment of steel bridges is challenging due to structural complexity and limited available S-N curves. This study proposes a generalized fatigue reliability model based on equivalent structural stress (ESS) that eliminates the need for curve selection. The model incorporates random variables of ESS range, cycle number, and material properties, derived from an ESS-based probabilistic S-N formulation. Numerical case studies evaluate the model's practicability, and sensitivity analyses examine the effects of ESS range, cycle number, and traffic volume. The proposed method is successfully applied to an instrumented steel arch bridge, achieving fatigue failure probability and reliability index through Monte Carlo simulation. Results demonstrate the viability and sensitivity of the proposed model, providing a solution for evaluating probabilistic fatigue life of welded details in steel bridges.

A multi-axial vibration fatigue evaluation procedure for welded structures in frequency domain

Xianjun Pei et al.

Summary: Modeling vibration fatigue of welded structures in the frequency domain is challenging due to stress singularity at weld locations and interactions of multiple vibration modes. A comprehensive procedure utilizing mesh-insensitive method and modal decomposition approach is proposed to address these issues. A non-proportionality correlation function is introduced to relate the power spectrum density of normal and shear traction stresses, establishing an effective stress parameter.

A Study of Fatigue Crack Propagation Paths at U-Rib Welds in Orthotropic Bridge Decks using a Phased-Array Imaging Technique

Haibo Yang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fatigue failure modes of single-and double-sided welded joints in orthotropic bridge decks using phased-array imaging technique. The study aims to verify the fatigue failure path defined by the traction structural stress method. Full-scale fatigue specimen tests are conducted to image and size the fatigue crack propagation law. The findings confirm that the fatigue failure mode of these welded joints is the thickness-through mode, consistent with the traction structural stress method.

Fatigue assessment of cruciform joints: Comparison between Strain Energy Density predictions and current standards and recommendations

Pietro Foti et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different design parameters on the fatigue strength of cruciform welded joints using the Strain Energy Density method. The results show that plate dimensions, scale effect, lack of welding bead penetration, and weld leg length are important factors affecting fatigue strength. Variations and discrepancies in the prediction of fatigue strength by different design guidelines were found due to the lack of consideration of certain design parameters.

Fatigue property of U rib-crossbeam-deck connections in OBD under combined loading of bending and torsion

Haibo Yang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fatigue property of U rib-crossbeam-deck connections in orthotropic steel bridge decks under combined loading of bending and torsion using the improved traction structural stress method. The applicability of the method is validated by comparing simulation results with experimental results, and the effects of specimen width-to-length ratio and combined loading amplitude on the fatigue property of OBD in multiaxial stress states are studied. The trend and amplitude of the improved traction structural stress distribution change with an increase in the width-to-length ratio.

A primary plus secondary local PWHT method for mitigating weld residual stresses in pressure vessels

Qiang Jin et al.

Summary: With the increasing use of large and ultra-large pressure vessels in petrochemical and power generation industries, traditional local post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) procedures are no longer feasible, prompting the introduction of a new primary-secondary heating based local PWHT technique (PS-PWHT). Both finite element residual stress modeling and experimental residual stress measurements have shown that the PS-PWHT method can significantly reduce welding-induced residual stresses, even leading to some level of compressive residual stresses at the vessel weld region.
